Page 6 July 2013 ‘The Way, Way Back’ both witty and charming movie The Way Way Back Director: Nat Faxon and Jim Rash Starring: Liam James, Sam Rockwell, AnnaSophia Robb, Toni Collette, and Steve Carell One of the best films to come out recently, The Way Way Back is witty and charming. With school out, summer vacation should be something to look forward to. However, teen Duncan (James) is dreading the “family” trip he’s being dragged on by his mother (Collette) and her boyfriend, Trent (Carell). Trent’s vacation spot near the beach, surrounded by Trent’s friends, is the last place Duncan wants to be, but he doesn’t have much say in the matter. So he tries to make the best of it and finds a friend in Owen (Rockwell), who gives Duncan a job at the local water park to keep him busy. Duncan also takes an interest in the girl next door to Trent, Susanna (Robb), who seems to him like the only sane person in the area his age. While things may not run smoothly in Duncan’s family life, these unlikely friendships can support him as he tries to change things for the better and save this summer vacation from Hell. The Way Way Back is similar to other movies with a teen outcast as a protagonist, but with quirky characteristics that make it original, much like Collette and Carell’s past film Little Miss Sunshine . The story and dialogue are well written, earning laughs while still managing to hit the more serious notes of the film. This movie also has a wonderfully talented cast. Liam James is perfect for the role of Duncan, getting all the little details of his character down to the way he holds himself throughout the film spot-on. He may not be a well-known name now, but hopefully that will change because he deserves proper recognition.
