Page 8 July 2013 2012-13 accomplishments numerous for District 6 By Sal DiCiccio We are at the end of fiscal year 2012-13 and I wanted to keep you up to date on all we have accomplished for District 6. Business reforms/jobs creation Earlier this year I chaired a committee with the goal of making Phoenix the best place in the nation to create jobs. We did it. We instituted 24-hour permitting and inspections. Additionally, we sped up the site plan-approval process by months. This clears the way for business to get permits faster so they can open their doors, create new jobs and continue to make Phoenix one of the best places in the country to do business. Fiscal accountability My effort to force the city to look at cutting waste and inefficiencies has created tremendous savings to the hard-working taxpayers. To date, the city of Phoenix has already seen $79 million in savings by becoming more efficient. In addition, the city has a $43 million contingency fund, the largest in city history. Domestic violence With the help of my colleagues Michael Nowakowski and Thelda Williams, we were able to pass the best-in-the-nation policy on addressing domestic violence. We now have a plan that deals with helping the victims better, but to start a campaign to end this devastating burden on families will take all of our best efforts. If you want to help, text GiveDV to 20222, to contribute. Crime We have made significant progress dropping the crime rate for our district. The statistics are out and I am happy to report that crime in the district is down 14 percent since I took office. Supporting our police is a top priority to me, and our efforts at the city are paying off. Echo Canyon update The council recently passed the final item on the Echo Canyon improvements. For the first time in 20-plus years, the Echo Canyon Trail is receiving much needed renovations. As the summer progresses, the improvements will be completed and this national treasure and gem of Phoenix will reopen and be better than ever. Working with community leaders, neighbors, hikers and the Town of Paradise Valley, I’m proud to have spearheaded these renovations and I look forward to the reopening in the fall. Historic preservation We don’t really know where we are going until we know where we have come Continued on page 16 Thank You, Arcadia... Page 9 July 2013 County’s Human Services Campus helping homeless By Steven Sarkis On any given day, an estimated 14,000 people are living on the streets of Maricopa County. Working within the justice system, I see this cycle of homelessness and poverty firsthand. Likely just trying to find a place to rest, homeless people often get cited with such violations as loitering, vagrancy or trespassing. With no money for transportation and certainly no money to pay fines they often don’t show up to court. Court dates come and go, delinquent fines increase over time and warrants get issued. And when warrants are issued, it becomes nearly impossible to get a driver’s license, find housing or obtain meaningful employment. That’s the cycle in a nutshell Maricopa County has a Human Services Campus in downtown Phoenix. The goal is simple: Help the homeless get back on their feet. Home to over a dozen social services agencies, each day more than 1,000 individuals find refuge on the campus. Also located on the Human Services Campus is the Maricopa County Regional Homeless Court. The homeless court allows all 50 municipal and justice courts in Maricopa County to transfer over qualifying cases. This means when a municipal or justice court judge sees an individual trapped in the cycle of missed court dates, delinquent fines and warrants being issued, we can send these cases to the Regional Homeless Court. Equipped to handle exactly these types of cases, the homeless court requires individuals be sober, complete community service in lieu of fines and go through transitional programs such as substance- abuse treatment with the ultimate goal of getting them on a path to meaningful employment. If you have never visited or even heard of this campus, it’s definitely worth the trip. Located at 230 S. 12 th Ave. in downtown Phoenix, the campus is filled with an amazing staff that genuinely cares about ending the cycle of homelessness in Maricopa County. This year, the campus has launched a campaign called Thirst Aid 2013 with the goal of collecting 300,000 bottles of water. In 2012, they collected more than 220,000 bottles. They also are requesting donations of sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen. To help, donate, volunteer or for more information visit their website at humanservicescampus.org or call 602- 229-1241.
