Page 12 July 2013 Sam Rockwell is excellent at capturing the seemingly carefree Owen, who became something akin to a brother for Duncan. Toni Collette is one of the most versatile actresses on screen, able to portray many different characters just as well as another, and her role as Duncan’s mild-mannered mother is no exception. Steve Carell doesn’t often play someone as hard to like as Trent, but when he does it’s something of a bittersweet treat because while his character may be despicable it’s because Carell’s doing his job well. Though they don’t get as much screen time, the side characters deserve mention. Each has a distinct personality and interacts differently with each of the other characters, making them all seem real and believable. While they may not be the focus of the story, no one the audience meets is unimportant from the neighbor’s kid with the lazy eye to the man who has quit his job at the water park too many times to count – but never left. Another redeeming quality is the love story between Duncan and Susanna, which progresses slowly and naturally, not taking over the movie. The main plot isn’t about them, but all the people Duncan meets and how the trip started as one of the worst things that could happen to him and becomes one of the best. Earning 4 ½ stars, The Way Way Back is definitely one I want to own when it comes out.
