PHOTO COURTESY OF VERITAS PREP By Mark Hays Since 1937, the programs within Arizona Boys State and Arizona Girls State have provided opportunities for high school students to engage with and learn about State Government through participation in mock elections and governmental positions. This year, Veritas Prep was excited to send six students to the events in June. The American Legion sponsors the boys’ program. It aims to “provide a working knowledge of our governmental process. The American Legion believes that individual students are thusly better prepared to assume the responsibilities of citizenship,” according to the website. The girls’ program, sponsored by The American Legion Auxiliary, has a similar mission: educating young women about the duties, privileges and responsibilities of American citizenship. A focus on helping students become responsible adults is at the forefront. The program seeks to “help them grasp the meaning of some of the responsibilities they must assume when they become adults.” The week-long event consists of creating a mock government modeled after Arizona. Participating students elect a governor, mayor, and city council members and set up legislative assemblies, courts, and law enforcement agencies. The boys will head to Northern Arizona University. The girls will head in the opposite direction – their program is at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Last year, Veritas Prep only sent three students to the boys’ program. “It has been a few years since we have had students attend Girls State. We are so excited to have students attending both this year,” Director of College Counseling Judi Paffenbarger said. Last year’s attendees enjoyed the process, noting it to be an exciting, challenging event. “Boys State helped me to discover the variance of character and family backgrounds, which enabled me to understand how big the world truly is,” participant Krikor Maranian said. “The program pushed me out of my comfort zone in many good ways, building my character and widening my view of politics in America,” Andrew Logan said. T his was a common theme for attendees. “Boys St ate was an amazing experience, pushing me out of my comfort zone, granting a deeper understanding for the inner workings of our government, and a love as well as respect for the world of politics,” Luke Hurst said. Only around 350 high school juniors with strong academic records and leadership skills are accepted to each program. Students apply through school guidance counselors and local American Legion Posts. “Everyone is a winner as they learn so much about our government, and they network with other top students in the state,” Paffenbarger said.
