The Grand Central Station in Midtown Manhattan is one of the biggest train stations in the world. It has a maximum commercial speed of 286 mph and can complete an 18-mile journey in just 7.5 minutes. DID YOU KNOW? TRAINS SOME REAL HORSE POWER In 1827, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad became the first U.S. company granted a charter for transporting passengers and freight. The company struggled to produce a steam engine that could traverse over rough terrain, instead relying on horse-drawn trains. Industrialist Peter Cooper, who owned land holdings over the proposed route, offered to design and build an engine. In August 1830, Cooper’s engine was undergoing testing when a horse- drawn train pulled up alongside it and challenged Cooper to a race. The steam engine quickly got the lead, but when a belt broke loose it was forced to give up, and the horse crossed the finish line first. B&O eventually became one of the most successful railways in the United States. The Grand Canyon Railway made its first journey to the Grand Canyon on September 17, 1901. The word train comes from a French verb which means to draw or drag. Some trains have a second locomotive which pushes the train forward from the back. The longest train ride in the world is a trip from Portugal to Vietnam. It is 10,056 miles long and takes approximately 12 days to complete.
