DID YOU KNOW? WHALES KILLER WHALES ARE DOLPHINS Orcas, also known as “killer whales,” are the largest dolphin family members. They are the ocean’s top predators, preying on a diverse range of marine species, which include fish, penguins, seabirds, sea turtles, cephalopods, sharks and marine mammals such as seals and even whales. – us.whales.org Humpback whales don’t eat for most of the year. All toothed whales have a ‘melon’ on their foreheads. Some whales blow bubbles that encircle their prey, making it easy for the whales to eat them. It’s estimated that there were over 225,000 Antarctic blue whales before their exploitation in the 1900s. Today there are less than 3,000 remaining in the wild. Over 80 percent of North Atlantic right whales have been entangled in fishing gear at least once during their lifetime. Usually, only male narwhals have a tusk – that develops from a tooth. The name ‘narwhal’ comes from old norse and means ‘corpse whale’ because it resembles a drowned sailor. Whale feces helps reduce climate change because it feeds phytoplankton, which produces 50 to 85 percent of the oxygen we breathe. Blue whales are actually grey. Thousands of tiny diatoms on their skin create the blue glow of the water around them, making these beauties appear blue. Dolphins are whales, but whales aren’t dolphins. Whales have two blowholes, whereas dolphins only have one. Whales can store oxygen molecules in their bodies and on average, hold their breath up to 90 minutes. A 60,000-pound whale can jump entirely out of the water. There are two main types of whales: baleen and toothed. To keep from drowning, whales do not fully sleep like other mammals. Whales can reach speeds up to 30 miles an hour. Whales do not chew their food. Whale vomit is found in many costly perfumes. Whales travel in pods. Whales’ tails are like our fingerprints – no two are the same. 480.946.5076 4130 n marshall way • scottsdale art one gallery | foundation Representing students and local artists of Arizona since 1993 artonegalleryinc.com @artonegalleryinc Bonsai I Diptych by Steven Allison • oil on panel • 12” X 6” X 2” • $450
