4 JULY 2022 EDITOR’S NOTE Fourth of July is one of my all-time favorite holidays. The red, white and blue decorations, firework shows, patriotic songs, the togetherness of communities all over the USA – if only for one day – is enough to make me proud of the neighborhoods I’ve come to call home. We’ve got an extensive round- up of Fourth of July activities around the Valley, including the Arcadia Fourth of July parade. This 26-year-old tradition gathers Arcadians for a morning of decorated cars and snacks, while the Phoenix Fire Department helps keep things cool. We’re also updating folks on what’s going on with our neighborhood associations. The ACMNA recently welcomed a new president, Michael Phillips who hails from North Carolina. Phillips said that he loves the community’s charm and is excited to donate his time to making Arcadia even stronger. A boutique hair salon has opened in the space that formerly housed Salon Sandoval, which was part of Arcadia for over 20 years. Salon Rae’s new owners are stylists that some might recognize, as they worked for the previous business and its owner, Chris, before Salon Sandoval was shuttered in 2017. Raechel, Alissa and Ilse remained close, and when the opportunity to return to their home base surfaced, they jumped at the chance and opened Salon Rae earlier this summer. Our Summer Vacation Photo Spread will happen again this year, so make sure to send photos to editor@arcadianews.com for a chance to be in the September issue. Your photo might be on the cover! The deadline to send in photos is August 8. Stay cool out there, and thank you for reading the Arcadia News, – Mallory Gleich – Mallory Gleich UPCOMING THEMES: No one has better coverage in the areas of Arcadia, Biltmore and the Camelback Corridor. It must be sung together.” – Gerald Stanley Lee Recently, more than 100 newspapers from around the country gathered together for the annual Association of Community Publishers (ACP) industry conference and the “Best of the Best” Awards Show. The industry organization has more than 130 community newspaper members with a circulation of more than seven million copies in North America. Your hometown newspaper brought home 13 awards this year in the categories of graphic design, advertising, editorial and “General Excellence.” In 12 of the last 13 years, The Arcadia News has finished as one of the top three community newspapers in the overall category, including eight first- place wins. Since the paper received its first recognition in 2009, Arcadia News has won more than 200 awards from local newspaper associations such as the Arizona Press Club, and international organizations that include the Independent Free Papers of America and ACP. Teachers We Love started in 2011 as a way for students and parents to honor a local teacher who has impacted their or their child’s life. This year’s turnout included not only teachers but also a school nurse from Arcadia High. Educators from St. Thomas the Apostle, St. Theresa, Hopi Elementary and Villa Montessori, also came together for Happy Hour and happy conversation. A special shout-out goes to Postino for hosting our event. Thank you to our sponsors: The Phoenician, The Joffe Group and Postino Winecafé, and thank you to all of our teachers for making a difference in the community.
