Selthun Here are some local Veterans Day events to give everyone the opportunity to thank, honor and remember all those who are serving or who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION Monday, Nov. 11; 3-4:30 p.m. The McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park hosts the city of Scottsdale’s annual celebration and includes a military band, honor guard and guest speakers, including Senator Martha McSally and Army veteran JB Spisso. NATIONAL VETERAN SUMMIT Tuesday, Nov. 5 – Thursday, Nov. 7 Over 1,000 veteran-owned companies will return to Phoenix for the 3rd Annual National Veteran Summit. This year’s theme is “advancing economic opportunity for the military community” and will include roundtable talks, an awards dinner, employment summit, career fair, Bridge Forum and workshops. The Bridge Forum this year will showcase mental health professionals, veterans, first responders and law enforcement and will focus on how to help and hire those with PTSD and how to break the stigma surrounding mental illness and veterans. This event is free for active duty service members, National Guard and Army Reserve and veterans. For more: herozonasummit.com. VETERANS DAY 10K Sunday, Nov. 10; 8 a.m. If you’re into fitness and supporting a good cause, register to participate in the 7th annual Veterans Day 10K, 5K, or 1-mile run/walk at Kiwanis Park, 101 W. Baseline Road, in Tempe. StartLine Racing is hosting this event to raise money for Team Red, White and Blue (RWB). Team RWB held similar race events at Arizona Falls in Arcadia in August and September. All ages and ability levels are welcome. Registration for the 10K is $45 through November 9, $35 for the 5K or virtual run, and $25 for the 1-mile fun run/walk. The 10K race begins at 8 a.m., the 5K at 8:15 a.m. and the 1 mile at 8:25 a.m. There will be an awards ceremony for the top three finishers in each age category in the 10K and 5K. For more: startlineracing.com. PHOENIX/TEMPE VETERANS DAY PARADES Monday, Nov. 11; 11 a.m. Honoring America’s Veterans hosts this parade. Last year there were 300 marching units, 2,500 marchers, 10 floats, 45,000 spectators and eight Veteran Grand Marshalls. The best places to view the parade are Camelback Road, east of Central Ave. and west of 7th St., and 7th St. south of Camelback to Montecito Ave. Make sure to arrive early to park on the side street around the parade route and snag a good spot for viewing. The parade ends at 1 p.m. and the streets reopen shortly thereafter. For more: honoringamericasveterans.org. The city of Tempe also hosts a parade on Veterans Day from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Stand along Mill Ave. and watch as the parade travels from Gammage Auditorium to Tempe Beach Park. A short ceremony follows to honor veterans. AVONDALE VETERANS DAY CEREMONY Monday, Nov. 11; 8:30 a.m. Bring the whole family for a 5K fun run with bootcamp-like obstacles at the Avondale Veterans Day ceremony, Fun Run and Hero’s Breakfast at Estrella Mountain Community College, Avondale Campus, 3000 N. Dysart Road, Avondale. The event begins at 7:45 a.m. and the 5K begins at 8:30 a.m. A Warrior’s Breakfast will follow and a Veterans Appreciation Ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. All proceeds support Veterans Increasing Persistence Program (VIPP), designed to assist veterans in financial situations that may prevent them from going to school or completing a degree. Register before the event for $30 or pay $35 the day of the event. After the run, stay and play at the kids zone and enjoy free giveaways and entertainment. The morning will conclude with a Veterans Day ceremony. For more: estrellamountain.edu. VETERANS DAY TRIBUTE Monday, Nov. 11; 2-4 p.m. A little further away is the Pride of Goodyear Veterans Day Tribute presented by the parks and recreation department at the Goodyear Ballpark, 1933 S. Ballpark Way. All five branches of the military are invited to participate in this family-friendly event that honors the men and women who serve our country.
