It’s officially summer time, and what could be better than a cool cup of gelato? Pairing it with a glass of wine and an opera classic, that’s what. This month the AZ Opera Center will be showing La Fanciulla del West and offering guests gelato and a glass of wine. Escape the heat and cool off with a day fit for Italy. This 5th Annual Backpack & School Supply Drive 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Office Max at Arcadia Crossing, 4519 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix. Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation is proud to announce its fifth annual Backpack and School Supply Drive. The organization, which has been promoting self-esteem within and enriching the lives of the more than 19,000 children in Arizona foster care via the funding of activities, education and other needs since 1983, needs the help of generous citizens Valley wide to help support this special cause. Last year, 5,600 backpacks were filled through AFFCF’s drive efforts. Come out to help reach this year’s goal of 5,000 new backpacks full of school supplies for the 2017-2018 school year. WEDNESDAY 7/19 Wednesdays at Westgate 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Fountain Park, Westgate, 6751 N. Sunset Blvd., Glendale. Enjoy some kid-friendly summer fun when the sun goes down. Each week there is a new theme, and this week it is Elena of Avalor’s Royal Fiesta. There will be games, music, prizes and dancing, and kids will even get a chance to meet Elena and take a photo with her. Bring the whole family and enjoy a night of royal fun! Come together for one night of toe-tapping music from one of music’s greatest eras. This show will headline six artists that share 53 Billboard hits among them. Artists that will be performing are The Turtles, The Association, Chuck Negron, The Cowsills, The Box Tops and Ron Dante. SATURDAY 7/22 Arizona Sunrise Series 6:30 a.m. at Rio Vista Park, 8866 W. Thunderbird Road, Peoria. Rise with the sun and get your running shoes on. This is the fifth Arizona Sunrise 5k run complete with a series medal, tech t-shirt, water stations to keep you hydrated and a pre- and post-race runner’s brunch. Phoenix Shanti Organization is a nonprofit that provides house, health and rehabilitative services to HIV-positive individuals and their families. The Laughs for Life event will feature four comedians, a cocktail hour and a raffle for items from local artisans. Laugh it up while supporting this cause.
