For Makena Patterson, the month was the start of a four-year journey that would culminate with a letter of commitment to Texas A&M University. Now a star volleyball player for the Gators, Patterson’s 6-foot-4 frame is a major asset on the court. But she wasn’t always thrilled with her exceptional height. “In elementary school, I was normal, but in middle school I started getting taller and I hated it,” Patterson reflected. “All the boys were little and I was tall, lanky and awkward. Volleyball gave me a place where I was cool for being tall and didn’t feel as alienated.” Patterson was drawn to volleyball in fourth grade because her older sister was the coach at her local church. After several years of playing for local club teams, such as the AZ Sky and the Arizona Storm, Makena was ready for high school-level competition. “When I got to Xavier, I was just so shell-shocked because there were so many older kids. There was so much leadership and I was kind of in awe of everyone around me,” Patterson said. Patterson’s coach at Xavier, Lamar-Renee Bryant, said Makena caught her eye from the minute she stepped on the court. “Tryouts that year, I saw a bright-eyed, 6-foot girl. You can’t miss her,” Bryant laughed. “She definitely took time to grow into her body but when she went up to swing, you took notice.” A four-year starter, Patterson’s parents were athletes in their past as well. Her mother, Carlette, swam competitively at Arizona State University, while her father, Steve, who passed away in 2004, played professional basketball for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Chicago Bulls in the 1970s. He was also a part of the famous UCLA Bruins basketball team that won three straight championships from 1969 to 1971. “My family background is so athletic and I think that helped me a lot,” Patterson said. “My mom understands it all, and it’s nice to have someone who gets it, especially throughout the whole recruiting process. She’s just been amazing with everything.” Patterson, who currently holds a 4.04 GPA at Xavier, said she chose Texas A&M in part because she has family near College Station. However, it was a recent trip to the campus that truly sold her. “I visited my family in Texas over Thanksgiving break and saw some of the campus,” Patterson said. “The thing I am most excited about is probably the whole A&M experience. They are so into the traditions, and being an Aggie and a part of that culture is something I am so excited about. Coach Bryant believes Makena will be a phenomenal addition for the Aggies and said she is excited to see her carry on the Gator tradition of excellence both on the court and in the classroom. “She has a lot of volleyball in front of her, but she is also extremely studious and brilliant,” Bryant said. “She will only raise her bar higher and higher and she offers a lot to the team at A&M. She works extremely hard for everything she gets.” Patterson ended her 2016 season with 115 sets played and 387 kills as a part of the Gators team that went 34-7 and was ranked number one in the state of Arizona, and number eight in the country.
