Five-time state champ Katie Higgins (left) signs for the University of Houston and Lainey Stephenson, one of two pitchers in Arizona to throw 1,000 strikeouts, signs for Lehigh University. By Ian Kraft and Nick Smith Veritas Prep Lainey Stephenson and Katie Higgins are two girls who do not have much in common. Growing up, the two spent their respective free time in separate arenas: Stephenson a star softball player and Higgins a phenom in the pool. Little did they know the end of their senior seasons at Veritas Prep would culminate in the same spotlight, as they both signed National Letters of Intent on November 9. Stephenson committed to playing softball at Lehigh University, in Pennsylvania, while Higgins has committed to swimming for the University of Houston, in Texas. Stephenson has been a Veritas Lady Falcon since sixth grade and said the lessons she learned at the school will stay with her after graduation. “The people here teach you how to work hard and how to strive for what you want,” said Stephenson. “The teachers and coaches have encouraged me regularly to be the best I can be. I will never forget what this school has meant to me.” One of the most dominant softball players in Arizona history, Stephenson was a two- time Division IV Player of the Year, a three- time member of the Division IV All-State Team and a two-time member of the Arizona All-Academic Team. In 2015, she became only the second pitcher ever in Arizona high school softball to record 1,000 strikeouts. After being pursued by several schools nationwide, Stephenson decided on Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Penn. “After I went to Veritas for a few years, I realized that I wanted to focus on academics in college, not just sports,” Stephenson said. “The people at Lehigh University, as well as the academics, were appealing. They offered me a chance to play for a great academic school and that is what I wanted most.” Higgins’ time at Veritas was equally as impressive, as she is a five-time state champion, three times in the 100-meter butterfly and two times in the 200-meter freestyle relay. But it is her three USA Swimming Scholastic All-American awards which she takes pride in the most. “My greatest accomplishment is the Scholastic All-American. To do it all three years has been such an honor,” Higgins said. “It means that I have reached an elite level of scholastic swimmers and it shows that my hard work in and out of the pool is being recognized.” Higgins will be attending the University of Houston in Texas next fall, and she said she is ready to be pushed harder than she ever has before. “What appealed to me most was that Houston stood out with their honors college. I loved the people that were there and it appealed more to me academically. The coaches there were amazing too,” said Higgins. “They were all relatively young and I felt like they were really easy to talk to. It felt right.” Higgins said she could not have become the student-athlete she is today without the guidance of her friends and family as well as the Veritas staff and coaches. “The most important thing I have learned from Veritas is work ethic. The school has pushed me to be on a whole different level academically and athletically. Everyone pushed me to be great and to want to do better with everything I did,” Higgins said. Stephenson will be majoring in Biology at Lehigh while Higgins will be studying Kinesiology at Houston. Arcadia High School Friday, December 9, showcased an embarrassment of riches at Arcadia High School, as the Titans celebrated a total of nine student athletes who signed their college letters of intent. “These are more than just great student athletes,” said Cher Fesenmaier, the school’s Athletic Director, while addressing a crowd of friends and family who had gathered for the event. “These are nine great people, who represent Arcadia well.” Four of the athletes honored at the event were volleyball players, highlighting the amount of talent on this year’s team. Evynn Eubanks will be attending Lourdes University, in Sylvania, Ohio, while her teammate Katie Murphy will be going to South Carolina to start her college career at Furman University. Kenadi Mitchell will be playing on the west coast for Cal State University and Jasmin Smith will be heading down the road to Glendale Community College. “What made our team special this year was our mental toughness,” said Smith. “We all kind of came out prepared to win and go as far as we could. We were all of the same mindset.” Both the boys and girls swim and dive teams were represented at the event. Clay Stoddard will be swimming for the University of Utah, while Savanna Carlson will be going north to the University of Wisconsin- Madison. Softball star Ariana Abalos will be going to Portland State University, while middle infielder Nick DiCarlo will be playing baseball at Cal Poly State University, in San Luis Obispo, California. Rounding out the list is DiCarlo’s teammate, pitcher and infielder Matt Schroer, who will be playing for Louisiana State University. As the crowd readied their cameras, the nine athletes picked up their pens together and signed on the dotted line, the first move toward the next phase of their athletic careers. Kenadi Mitchell spoke for everyone, as she described the feeling that comes with the end of the recruiting trail. “There’s so many different factors that go into the decision. Family, what to do in the future, is the team a fit, coaching style,” said Mitchell. “So, it can be tough. But I’m excited for a new chapter in my life. I’m looking forward to the transition and I think it is going to be fun.” Signing Day for local high school athletes
