Runny nose, achy joints, fever, cough… the winter season is here and that means cold and flu viruses are just around the corner. With that in mind, it’s time to start thinking about how to prevent those irritating symptoms that seem to come out of nowhere and mess with our daily lives. Stephanie Pinello, who works at North Scottsdale Family Medicine, says that people are susceptible all year long for the influenza virus. “We tend to see a rise in sick children after heading back to school in the fall, which often results in sick parents. In addition, the holiday season brings everyone together, which can also result in people getting sick,” Pinello said. The influenza virus was identified in 1933. Shortly after, Louis Pasteur was credited with the first attempt at a vaccination with a live vaccine. Today, the flu vaccine is comprised with dead viruses that protect us against two strains of influenza. Joseph Brewster, who is a physician at North Family, says that one of the most common concerns he has from patients is that they will contract the flu after getting the flu shot. “The flu vaccine is a dead virus. It is not possible for a dead virus to become live and give a person the flu. If a patient feels symptoms after the shot, it is most likely that your immune system is making antibodies to protect from flu strains,” Brewster said. The flu is transmitted by airborne droplets, so when someone coughs or sneezes and another person breathes in that air, they can get sick. The flu can also be contracted by touching surfaces and then touching your face, eyes or nose. Brewster says that a number of herbs, vitamins and minerals have also been found to help alleviate symptoms. One of these is buckwheat honey, which helps to reduce the severity of a cough. Oregano oil, which can be found at places like Sprouts or Whole Foods, has been found to help with alleviating a sore throat or a stuffy nose. People have put it in their humidifiers or put a few drops under their tongue. But be careful, it’s very strong and does not taste good. Along with the usual remedies to help influenza and colds, there are also a number of herbs, vitamins and minerals that can help alleviate the symptoms. Other than getting a flu shot, Brewster and Pinello recommend simple steps to avoid catching a cold or the flu. Make sure to get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids and wash your hands constantly.
