Saint Theresa Catholic School Saint Theresa Catholic School By Kelly Potts Arcadia resident Nancy Arnold, an award- winning teacher and children’s author, recently took the prize for Constituting America’s Best Senior Essay with her essay responding to Ronald Reagan’s quote, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.” She was the only senior (age 65+) winner for the We the Future national contest, which gives prizes and scholarships to students from kindergarten, to college, to 65+ for creating original songs, short films, public service announcements, speeches, poems, drawings, photos and essays inspired by the U.S. Constitution. “Winning the contest and representing the organization has been a thrill,” said Arnold. “Because the essay topic involved a quote by President Ronald Reagan, it was especially gratifying to have had my essay chosen by a judge who once served in his administration.” Arnold has moved on to writing children’s books, after retiring from her previous job as an elementary school teacher. Although her career focus is different, her goals remain the same; to excite children about American history and to help insure that they understand the values upon which our country was founded. “Having spent 30 years as a teacher, writing children’s books was a natural progression for me,” said Arnold. “I had always wanted to write a book... from the moment I pulled that first biography of George Washington off the Fort Worth Public Library children’s shelf the summer after I was in third grade, I was hooked on writing, hooked on George, and hooked on American history!” Arnold has written two books, Patriotic Pups and Pioneer Pups , and she is currently working on her third. She notes that her greatest accomplishment has been watching her former students become productive adults who love and appreciate the nation they are a part of. “My writing for children evolves out of my great desire to help them become excited about this amazing country in which we are blessed to live,” said Arnold. “My idea is that if they like my books, perhaps they will be inspired to reach for other books on the shelf about our Founding Fathers, and learn the costs of securing the freedoms offered by our Constitution.” Teaching history to the young one book at a time Winning the contest and representing the organization has been a thrill.” Nancy Arnold
