KIDS CORNER By Nick Smith Fall is the time when Phoenix residents finally emerge from their air-conditioned hideouts into the great outdoors. The cooler temperatures are perfect for families wanting to spend some outside time together and the area has plenty of fun events coming up. Here are a handful of locally hosted happenings that are tailor-made for a crisp October evening with family and friends. SCHNEPF FARMS PUMPKIN AND CHILI PARTY schnepffarms.com 24810 S. Rittenhouse Road Queen Creek, Arizona 85242 If you can think of it, Schnepf Farms will probably have it during the month of October. Admission to the Thursday through Sunday events includes hayrides, roller coasters, mini-golf, a rock climbing wall, pig races and a petting zoo. It’s all best enjoyed with a warm bowl of delicious chili. The event is $18 at the gate but visit a local Fry’s Food Store for discounted $15 tickets. CAREFREE PUMPKIN GARDEN carefreepumpkingarden.com 8 Sundial Cir. Carefree, AZ 85377 If you’re picturing the town of Carefree’s Enchanted Pumpkin Garden to be a small patch on the side of the road, think again. This is an entire pumpkin world created by renowned artist Ray Villafane and spread across four acres of the Carefree Desert Gardens. Halloween themed events around the Garden will run from October 17 through October 31 and will feature family carving nights, pumpkin pin hunts and pie eating contests. The events are free and your pet dog is welcome to come along in his or her own costume! THE GREAT PUMPKIN FESTIVAL dbg.org 1201 N. Galvin Pkwy. Phoenix, AZ 85008 Few October traditions are as beloved as a fall festival. The Desert Botanical Garden is holding its own pumpkin festival, complete with everything we love about this season. Hayrides, pumpkin decorating, live music and a hay bale maze are all part of the fun. The event is included with a paid Garden admission but members and all children under 3 are admitted for free. The Great Pumpkin Festival will take place October 21 through October 23. PUMPKIN DAYS AND CORN MAZE tolmachoff-farms.com 5726 N. 75 Ave. Glendale, AZ 85303 Take a trip to Tolmachoff Farms in Glendale through November 6 for their fall event. Guests may visit a pumpkin patch, petting zoo, hay pyramid and take a train ride. Three different corn mazes give you the chance to pick your own adventure. A six-acre family corn maze has a different theme every year, and the little ones can tramp though a mini maze that is just their size. More courageous adventurers can take on the haunted corn maze. Tickets are $10 each for ages 2 and up.
