Looking for something sweet? Share an order of Monkey Bread or dive into a Churro Waffle with bananas and caramel. If you’re craving a heartier meal, try the Brunch Burger with bacon, aged Gouda, fried egg, shredded lettuce, roasted garlic aioli, pickles and house cut fries. If you want lighter fare, make your own omelet and customize the dish with 15 different ingredients. Also, guests can enjoy $15 bottomless mimosas until 2 p.m. THE JOY BUS DINER 3375 E. Shea Blvd. Thejoybusdiner.com Now you can brunch for a good cause. The Joy Bus Diner is a 100 percent nonprofit café (that’s right, 100 percent) and serves up made-to-order breakfast. Reclaimed wood adorns part of the space. Bright tones of teal, yellow and red cover the remaining wall space, as well as the industrial style chairs. Guests can indulge in delicious fare such as Princess Poppyseed Pancakes, which are stuffed with “fluffy lemon”; double-dipped crispy Chicken and Waffles; hearty Chiliquilles; or Avocado Woods Toast, served with a poached egg, arugula and tomato. Every dish served benefits The Joy Bus; a program that delivers thoughtfully crafted meals to cancer patients across the Valley. FARM & CRAFT 4302 N. Scottsdale Road Ilovefarmandcraft.com If you’re looking for a healthy and trendy destination to savor the weekend, stop by this downtown Scottsdale bistro. The open- air concept is decked out with white-painted bricks, beams that serve as light fixtures hovering above the dining room, and a mural with the mantra “all I want is food and affection.” Highlights from the menu include Protein Porridge, made with red quinoa, almond milk, honey, coconut, berries and banana; a Breakfast Sandwich loaded up with sliced avocado, eggs, bacon, cheddar, vegan mayo and a flax seed bun; and the Spinach and Black Bean Bowl, topped with two eggs cooked any style. What’s more, Farm & Craft serves up pressed juices and protein smoothies. Try their kombucha cocktails or half-priced bottles of rosé on Sundays. Also, you can bring the brunch to your house, as growlers of cold brew coffee and kombucha are available to take home. ARTIZEN 2401 E. Camelback Road Artizenaz.com Incorporating seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, the Artizen is a stylish gathering place for weekend fun. Located inside the new boutique hotel, The Camby, the restaurant’s atmosphere is stunning, with rich indigo walls and ceilings, paired with elements of copper throughout. Page 23 October 2016 By Riley Kissee A trip to Northern Arizona has become a regular occurrence for many living in the Valley of the Sun. Phoenicians visit Flagstaff to seek refuge from the heat, experience a change of scenery or enjoy outdoor recreation. However, there’s another often overlooked reason to visit Flagstaff, and that is the restaurant and bar scene. Here are several must-visit destinations when making the trip up north. SHIFT KITCHEN AND BAR 107 N. San Francisco St. shiftflg.com Shift is the kind of casual yet modern restaurant you would expect to find in a city like San Francisco or Portland. The walls are covered in clean, white subway tile paired with accents of navy blue molding, elements of wood, canary yellow dangling light fixtures and an open concept kitchen. Husband and wife duo, Joe and Dara Rodger, craft a creative menu of New American cuisine that rotates nightly. Highlights from a recent menu include their Tomato Sorbet with Smoked Chevre and Guanciale, Colorado Lamb Tartare with Pickled Mustard Seed and Duck Yolk, and Celery Panna Cotta with Raisins and Peanut Butter. They even incorporate forest-to-table ingredients such as the rich flavors of lobster mushrooms foraged in the Flagstaff wilderness, which are featured in their decadent Parisian gnocchi dish. COPPA CAFÉ 1300 S. Milton Road coppacafe.net This restaurant is unsuspecting, yet an absolute must if you visit Flagstaff. Located in a strip mall, this European eatery is cozy and sure to provide a bit of warmth during the fall and winter season. Flagstaff native Executive Chef Brian Konefal and his wife, Pastry Chef Paola Fioravanti, worked in some of the top kitchens in Italy, Spain, New York and San Francisco before settling into the inviting café space. Coppa is a destination for all hours of the day: brunch, lunch, happy hour or dinner. The offerings include local ingredients prepared with European flare, such as Arizona Citrus and Scallops with Anise Hyssop Liqueur; Churro Lamb Chorizo with Wild Sage and Preserved Tomatillo; and Sonoran Wild Mesquite Pasta with Local Pork Shoulder Confit, Paddle Cactus, Sunchoke and Beets. To explore all of the many flavors Coppa Café has to offer, the tasting menu is the perfect choice. MOTHER ROAD BREWING CO. 7 S. Mikes Pike St. motherroadbeer.com Mother Road is a great way to kill two birds with one stone: Enjoy incredible local beer and a delicious slice of authentic Neapolitan pizza from Pizzicleta, the neighboring wood- fired eatery that has received local acclaim. Highlights from the list of brews include the Lost Highway, a Black IPA with a smooth chocolate, caramel flavor and a name that nods to Route 66; the Gold Road Kolsch-style beer, which has just enough malt flavor and is easy to drink; the ever-popular Tower Station IPA, a nice hoppy beer with hints of citrus and pine; and numerous other limited edition beers available on draft. HOPS ON BIRCH 22 E. Birch Ave. hopsonbirch.com Hops on Birch doesn’t serve food, but that doesn’t mean it’s not packed with flavor. This bar has one of the best selections of beer – not just in Flagstaff as it rivals many bars in the Phoenix area as well. The 34 taps are rotated on a regular basis, often with hard-to-find limited release beers, so you’re in for a treat every time you stop in. Their establishment offers five nights of live music that pair well with a glass of craft brew, and what’s more, you don’t have to leave your dog at home, as all four-legged friends are welcome inside. LITTLE AMERICA HOTEL 2515 E. Butler Ave. flagstaff.littleamerica.com Looking for a place to stay while you wine and dine in the mountains? The iconic Little America was remodeled with a sleek makeover this summer, featuring design elements that allude to Arizona throughout, from turquoise accents to rustic wood beams.
