By Nick Smith Ellie Schroer knew the next two days were going to be a whirlwind. It was a Friday morning and she was preparing to head down to Tucson, where she would audition in the afternoon for the University of Arizona pom line. After dancing that afternoon, she would stay overnight and then dance all day on Saturday to finish the audition. Then she would try to race back up to Phoenix for her senior prom that evening. Oh, and it was her birthday too. Seriously. “There was a lot going on and I had to try to ignore it,” said Schroer. “I mean, to be on this team was my dream.” The moment was the culmination of over a decade of work. Schroer started dancing in front of the television as a 2-year-old and enrolled in ballet lessons shortly after. “I love when people can tell that I’m having the time of my life while I’m dancing,” said Schroer. “I love how music allows me to let everything out and express every emotion.” This isn’t Schroer’s first visit to the University of Arizona. When she was younger her grandparents lived in Tucson and they took her to see the campus during a spring break trip. “I had my mind made up,” said Schroer. “I just knew this was where I wanted to dance.” Halfway through her freshman year, Schroer’s family moved to Phoenix and she enrolled at Arcadia High School. She spent her high school years splitting dance time between the Paula Carr Dance Academy in Scottsdale and the Arcadia pom and spirit line . “My coaches are literally the reason why I’m here,” said Schroer, referring to Dance Academy Coach Paula Carr and Arcadia Ellie Schroer recently achieved her lifelong dream, learning she made the UofA pom line. Coach Tracy Puddy. “I’m so thankful for how they’ve helped me get to this point.” As her senior year came to a close, Schroer headed out to Tucson for her marathon tryout at UofA. Nearly 200 girls competed with Ellie for eight open spots on the team. “I remember saying to myself that this was an experience either way,” said Schroer. “We were in the McKale Center and I was like, ‘If nothing else, I got to dance here.’” Ellie made it through Friday evening and woke up Saturday for her make-or-break day. The tryout that day lasted from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and then came the news she’d been waiting for. “When they called my number I think my jaw just dropped,” she said. “It was shocking. I don’t even know how to describe it. I was so excited. I felt like a little kid. I kept thinking, ‘My biggest dream just came true!’” She didn’t have time to celebrate for long though, as there was still one more feat to accomplish that day. “I did end up making it to my prom,” she said. “An hour late, but I made it!” Arcadia High graduate dances her way to success
