Page 47 August 2016 By Ian Kraft To Tucson native and Arcadia resident Kelly Cagle, it is a lifestyle that taught her the importance of teamwork, cooperation and trust. Cagle attended Duke University from 1992- 1995. She received All- American honors in 1993, 1994 and 1995 and won the ACC Player of the Year award in 1995. She is still the women’s all-time leader in shots, goals and points at Duke. After graduation, she went on to become an assistant coach at the University of Texas in 1996 followed by Wake Forest University from 1997-2001 before landing her first head coaching job at Virginia Tech where she coached for eight seasons. On September 9, Cagle will be one of seven Duke Blue Devils to be enshrined in the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame, alongside former Phoenix Suns basketball player Grant Hill, during a ceremony held in Durham, North Carolina. “When I got the call a month or so ago,” Cagle said, “I thought of all the people in my life: my husband, my kids, my teammates and coaches…quite a lot of emotions came back to me. It truly is an honor.” When asked how she feels about being the first female soccer player inducted into Duke Athletics Hall of Fame, she said it is “so humbling.” Cagle’s teammate and close friend from Duke, Katherine Vettori called Cagle fiercely competitive and the most loyal friend she has come in contact with. “Kelly and I met on a recruiting trip to Notre Dame while we were still in high school and we were instantly friends,” Vettori said. “We were both really excited when we found out we had both committed to Duke and I was so excited to play beside her.” Vettori said Cagle’s leadership was absolutely motivational, and went on to say, “Kelly taught me humility. She taught me to want to be excellent. She would never expect an honor like this and that is exactly why it is so well deserved.” Cagle is the founder of The 180 Group, an organization that uses coaching and guidance to inspire teams to work together. “Coaching soccer and being a part of a team was so embedded in my life that I always knew once I was done playing, there would be more work to do,” Cagle said. “It is important that kids know it is not always going to be perfect, but no matter what, being a team is crucial.” Off the field, Kelly and her husband Dan Cagle are happily married with two daughters, Maggie, 12, and Nancy, 8. The Cagle family has lived in Arcadia for nearly six years. For more information on Cagle and The 180 Group, visit the180group.org.
