Page 58 June 2016 By Nick Smith When asked what her favorite part of playing tennis is, Arcadia High School sophomore Katie Reed gave an answer that might surprise people. “I love being a part of the team,” said Reed. “The best part about playing is being with your friends and cheering for them, and knowing that they’re cheering for you.” Although her sport is usually viewed as an individual one, Reed doesn’t see it that way. “I would call tennis very much a team sport while in high school,” said Reed. “We all wear our team shirts to school on match days. We have team dinners and celebrations and talk to each other on a group text. I think it helps you stay determined, knowing that you have this support behind you.” Reed and the Arcadia girls varsity team needed that support this season. Last year they had won the state championship in Division II and had subsequently been bumped up to Division I, the top section in the state. “It was a lot tougher this year,” noted Reed. “You’re playing against bigger schools and better players. We finished 9-5, which is good considering we had some injuries.” Reed had one of those injuries. She missed a week after rolling her ankle in practice. But she only missed one match and then came back firing. “I would say it’s my determination,” said Reed, when asked what her greatest strength is on the court. “I always am going to try and find a way, even if I’m losing. So even if you’re down to the last point, you keep fighting.” Reed credited Coach Josh Olshan with helping to foster the determination in her and the other players. “I don’t know what we’d do with someone else as our coach,” she said. “He’s always coming up to the fence during matches, encouraging and supporting us.” The team ended up finishing fifth in Division 1 this season. Reed and her doubles partner, Jillian Rasmussen, won third place at state. Reed wants to keep the close team bond during her final two years at Arcadia. She notes that the divisions may be shuffled again and they still aren’t quite sure where the Titans will end up. But who the opponent is doesn’t matter to her. “Whomever we end up playing, we’ll come to compete,” she said. “My goal is to keep bringing the spirit of the team up and I think we’re going to do really well.” AHS sophmore feels the team spirit in tennis Katie Reed is only a sophmore but plays on Arcadia’s highly competitive Varsity tennis team.

Thirteen- and 14-year-old boys shagged fly balls and drove line drives up the middle, trying to make the cut. Parents, coaches and the president of the league watched from the stands. Then, a girl walked out onto the field. “I was shaking,” said 13-year-old Jordan Nunez. “I had no idea if I would be accepted.” The kids paired up to play catch and Jordan’s partner lightly tossed the baseball to her. She caught it, wound up and fired the ball back as hard as she could. “After that, they treated me just like anyone else,” said Jordan. “They don’t take it easy on me. And I love that.” Jordan’s journey toward playing with the boys began the first time she faced a pitching machine. Her first softball league had coaches tossing balls for the girls to hit. Jordan says that was pretty fun but her outlook quickly changed when she moved up to machine pitch. “I just loved hitting off the machine way more,” she said. “It was awesome to see how much power I had when I hit the ball. I just remember loving that feeling of hitting the ball.” For five seasons, Jordan played softball in the Arcadia Little League, learning the finer points of the game. She loved everything about her setup, from the coaches to the other players. Once she hit age 13, however, the fun stopped. “Arcadia Little League didn’t offer softball after age 12,” said Jordan’s mother, Kelly Nunez. “There aren’t club level softball teams in Arcadia either. It was a sad time.” A devastated Jordan was almost resigned to her fate, when her parents spotted a flyer advertising tryouts for an age 13 and 14 boys team, while signing up her 10-year- old brother for Little League. “There really wasn’t much pushback,” said Kelly. “We said she could go for it; the coaches were accepting. The president of the league attended tryouts and he didn’t have any problem with it.” Jordan isn’t the kind to just dip her toe in the water. Once she’d made the team, she wanted to try her hand at her favorite position when she played softball… catcher. She had played third base at first but had moved behind the plate two years earlier. “You know, I actually love it,” said Jordan, when asked about the position change. “It’s kind of scary at first, but you get to be a part of every play. What’s been nice is we get to switch catchers on this team. I was the only catcher in softball and that kind of tires you out.” Jordan splits her field duties between catching, third and second base, all while trying to adjust to the differences between her old sport and the new one. “We didn’t steal in softball,” said Jordan. “And the bases are farther apart. That throw from home to second is really tough. I felt so happy the first time I got it there. And the ball comes in a lot faster. The boys are really skilled.” The most obvious adjustment is going from all girls to being the only one on the diamond. Occasionally there will be detractors, like the woman in the stands who loudly announced that “baseball is for boys, that girl should be on a softball team,” as Jordan came to bat. “Once in awhile, there’s a small-minded person,” said Jordan. “But honestly, most people have been accepting of me. It’s been so fun and the coaches are amazing.” “I’m so happy for her,” said Kelly. “At first I was just imagining these boys sliding into home and her getting hurt. But once she started playing, I wasn’t nervous. It turned into joy.” Jordan’s future is open after fitting in just fine with the boys this year. She could play baseball again, but is also hoping for an upper level softball team in Arcadia next year so she can reunite with her old teammates.
