SAME SERVICE DAY *** Page 56 June 2016 By Ian Kraft Students from Tavan Elementary School, Cordova Primary School and Cordova Middle School attended the third biennial career fair hosted by Tavan on May 9. The event consisted of students that ranged from kindergarten through eighth grade and consisted of more than 40 professionals from the Arcadia area. In attendance were representatives from the local police and firehouse as well as a dentist, a lawyer, an opera singer, a veterinarian, a rocket scientist and more, all of whom were invited via letters written by students from all three schools. The event consisted of three different areas with room for each professional to display their career to the children using displays or hands-on activities. The kids were presented with opportunities to sit in a local crime scene response vehicle, play video games with a representative from GameStop, and even hold a sword brought in by a theater professor from Arizona State University. Since two of the three locations were held outdoors, Tavan students volunteered to serve water and granola bars to all of the professionals as a sign of gratitude for their time. Ana McCrory, a bilingual speech language pathologist at both Cordova schools, and Maria Hase, a speech language pathologist from Tavan, put the event together in 2009 and have continued to host the event every other year. McCrory said the main idea behind the event is to provide the students with an opportunity to speak with professionals and to develop their language skills. “Maria and I believe that language is in everything,” McCrory said. “We want kids to use their language in powerful ways and to know how important their language is and to use it every day in their lives. “We realized that this was a great opportunity to empower them and to let them know how much power their voice has,” McCrory said. McCrory, a former teacher at Tavan, wanted students from the Cordova schools to experience the event alongside the students from Tavan as an effort to “enhance their linguistic abilities together.” To further encourage the students to learn, both teachers had the students create their own original questions to ask the professionals. Some of the questions were, “What made you choose your career?” and “What is your favorite part about doing your job?” Walking from station to station, the students marveled at all of the opportunities in front of them while listening to each person tell their story. Hase said the event has the potential to grow and she believes it could someday become an Arcadia-wide event. “We’ll have to see how it evolves and how the kids respond,” Hase said. “But I would absolutely love to see this program expand.” Both Hase and McCrory expressed gratitude for one another as well as the administration offices in each school. McCrory said, “The administration at Tavan and the Cordova schools were so helpful to accommodate the needs of both schools. Both Maria and I cannot thank the principals and administrators enough for making this a reality.” McCrory said the event could eventually be moved to Cordova to further accommodate the schools, but she said she “100 percent” wants to hold another fair in 2018. “We have to do whatever we can to further [the children’s] knowledge and empower their minds. We take a lot of pride in bringing the communities together for this event, McCrory said. “It truly is a team effort.” Career fair welcomes 40 professionals, hundreds of students From police officers to veterinarians, professionals turned out for the kids on May 9 at Tavan Elementary School.
