PHOENIX COUNTRY CLUB SEVENTH STREET & THOMAS ROAD Page 42 April 2016 By Ian Kraft The Hermosa Inn is celebrating its 80-year anniversary in 2016, and what used to be home to cowboy artist Alonzo “Lon” Megargee in the 1930s, is now one of the 10 best Scottsdale luxury hotels according to USA Today . Born in 1883, Megargee moved from Philadelphia to Phoenix when he was 13 years old. Truly a Jack of All Trades, Megargee lived his life to the fullest as a fireman, homebuilder, broncobuster, poker dealer and artist. Pam Swartz, the director of guest experience at The Hermosa Inn, said, “Lon had a zest about him, but his true passion was his art.” In 1913, Arizona’s first governor, George W.P. Hunt commissioned Megargee for 15 murals for the state capitol building, and the murals can be seen there today. By 1936, Megargee had used his studies of Mexican and Spanish architecture to create his home, “Casa Hermosa,” which translates to “Beautiful House.” At this point, Megargee had become quite well known for his work, and he began hosting family and friends, and subsequently turning hosting into a side business. Megargee was known by many as a consummate ladies’ man as Lon is said to have had as many as eight different wives. In 1941, he decided to sell Casa Hermosa, filled with his artwork, as part of a divorce. After the new owners of Casa Hermosa settled in, they received a visit from a taxi full of guests willing to pay to stay the night, and so The Hermosa Inn was born. Over the next 50 years, the hotel saw thousands of visitors and the property began to evolve with the additions of tennis courts, a pool and added living space. In 1992, The Hermosa Inn underwent a restoration project spearheaded by new owners, and Paradise Valley residents, Fred and Jennifer Unger and Art Cunningham. Swartz said the idea behind the restoration was to revive the original charm and long- standing tradition of the historic structure after much of it was damaged in a fire in 1987. In 2009, ownership spent $2 million to remodel and enhance the property. In this remodel, additions like a sculpture garden and an art studio were introduced. Today, The Hermosa Inn has 34 casitas and villas available upon reservation. In celebration of its 80-year anniversary, The Hermosa Inn is hosting several events open to the public. On March 8, The Hermosa Inn hosted its inaugural Conversations in Fashion, an event where guests mingled with esteemed fashion designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka of the American fashion brand Badgley Mischka. On April 28, Duncan’s Trading Company and Pillsbury Wine Company join the culinary team at Lon’s, the on-site restaurant at Hermosa, to create a five-course dinner for Hermosa guests using primarily Arizona ingredients paired with Arizona wines.
