The kids are exhausted and all they want to do is pass out the first moment they are clicked in. Except. That’s the worst thing ever. Because if they doze off in the car for any length of time – even for a prolonged blink – the likelihood of them falling asleep again in their beds once you arrive home, is zero. A 20-second car nap is the number one killer of actual naps. Research says so. Car naps are a danger to the American family. You can literally hear the trail of destruction a car nap leaves behind; just listen closely at the door of your nap-aged neighbors. If you hear uncharacteristic wails and shouting from parents and children, respectively, then you know. Car Nap wins again. I have plenty of strategies for handling the car-nap situation. I ask incessant questions about their friends or activities or letters of the alphabet. I play, “Do you see that pink elephant? You don’t?! Look closer.” I convince my kids there is a sleep monster in the car that will bite if they fall asleep (they’ve grown too smart for that, even when I growl intermittently). I roll the window down – which my daughter hates – and let all surrounding businesses and bystanders at the intersection of Camelback Road and 44th Street be entertained by her screams. I am pleased that today, after months of testing, I can finally say the best way to prevent the dreaded Car Nap is…a trip to the bank. I am an independent contractor, which means my income comes in the mail, check by check. Soooo, I pick the kids up from preschool. We talk about the alphabet, etc. And just about the time the eyes start closing, Car naps – and how to avoid them I pull into the bank drive-thru and suddenly, miraculously, the kids are on their best behavior because they know what’s coming. As I awkwardly reach for the deposit drawer, the children ask with the voice of angels, for a lollipop; a pink one and whatever color Arn likes that week. The plan is pretty much foolproof and a productive bright spot in our day. Until, you don’t need to go to the bank. This past February, it was a slower month for me. My website was undergoing a redesign, so I wasn’t doing any outreach – which meant I received fewer speaking events (the majority of my work) and 50-percent fewer deposits. Truthfully, it made me uneasy. Of course, I didn’t voice this unease with anyone. I didn’t want to admit weakness and I certainly didn’t want sympathy. I was planning to just let it pass, unnoticed. Unnoticed until a particularly whiny preschool pick up. Both kids were exhausted; I was too tired to talk about the letters of the alphabet. All I wanted to do was get them home and put us all to bed. I was focused entirely on that goal when I heard Arn call from the seat behind me. “Mama, can we get a lollipop?” He pointed at the bank as I whizzed past it. “No Arn, I don’t need to go to the bank today,” I sighed. “Awwwwhhhh,” he whined the way only a 4-year-old boy can, “we never go to the bank anymore!” There it was. My deepest fear revealed from the backseat. “Go to sleep,” was all I could say. I now get my DumDums at Walgreens; though don’t try buying them in the drive-thru, they’re not the bank.
