These women are recognized not only because of their work around the Valley, but also because they represent the mission of the YWCA: “Eliminating racism and empowering women.” Each honoree is recognized under a specific category. These categories include Corporate; Advocacy; Community Service; Military, Police and Fire; Racial Justice; and the Dorothy Willey Award. This year, the honorees are: Tracy Bame Tracy is the president of the Freeport-McMoRan C op p e r a nd G old Foundation. She is honored for the Community Service in Corporate award. Tracy demonstrates continuous support for women in intellectual and financial areas, and developing corporate and scalable programs geared towards the achievement of women. Susan Berman Susan is the president and CEO of the Fresh Start Women’s Foundation. She is honored under the Advocacy category. The Fresh Start Foundation is an organization geared towards the self-suff iciency, education and personal development of women. Susan started off as a client of the Fresh Star t Foundation and grew to become the CEO. She also volunteers as a counselor and facilitator for a number of groups around the Valley. Jan Blaser-Upchurch Jan is honored under the Military, Police and Fire category. Through her work with Mothers Against Drunk Driving and being the President of the Arizona Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors, Jan has helped countless residents grieve, grow and move on from a crime or death. Jan continues helping and supporting families of fallen police officers. Ashley Bridwell Another honoree under the Advocacy category is Ashely Bridwell. Ashley serves as a Neurological Rehab Program Social Worker and leader with the Barrow Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She designed a program to address traumatic brain injury in domestic violence victims, which is free and supported by community donations. She also serves the community as an adjunct professor at ASU in social work. Connie R. Meza Connie is honored under the Racial Justice category. Connie developed a number of programs focusing on disadvantaged and disabled students after graduating from ASU. She worked in the garment district in Los Angeles where she uncovered unsafe working conditions. She also spends time volunteering around the community. Connie graduated with her master’s degree and now teaches elementary school. Dana Campbell Saylor Dana is being honored with the Dorothy Willey Award. This award goes towards an individual who exemplified the YWCA mission in every sense of the word. Dana was the CEO of the YWCA from 2006-2014 where her work led to a partnership in establishing a shelter for homeless veterans, and also developed the YWCA Metro Young Women’s Forum as well as a financial education program. This year, the YWCA also decided to award four corporations with honors for their work in the community. The honorees are as follows: • National Bank of Arizona: Financial Education Award • Greenburg Traurig: Advancing Young Professionals Award • Midwestern University: Women’s Empowerment Award • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona: Senior Champions Award The YWCA Tribute to Leadership Gala is scheduled for February 13, 2016.
