Every December, as part of the Charros Outstanding Students and Educators Program, principals and faculty from local schools select a teacher of the year and an outstanding male and female student of the year from each school represented. At Arcadia High School’s winter assembly in December, the Scottsdale Charros presented awards to students Megan Reniewicki and Graham Byron, and math teacher Barb Thomas. They will be celebrated during the annual Outstanding Students and Education Awards Banquet in April. “Arcadia High school is proud of our winners this year and they are very deserving of the honor. We are so appreciative of everything that the Charros do for our community and our school,” said Nathan Slater, principal of Arcadia High. “Their financial support is tremendous as well as the time they commit to improve all of the schools in Scottsdale. “ Comprised of local business and civic leaders, the group has made positive changes in the community since 1961, when it was formed as a special activity organization of the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce. They were given the name “Charros” which translates to “gentleman riders” in Spanish, fitting for representatives of Scottsdale, the “West’s most western town.” The group was responsible for promoting special events in Scottsdale. Throughout the years, this included golf, tennis, judo, marathons, bull riding, and, of course, spring training baseball. Through these events, they have raised a significant amount of money and given back to local schools within the Scottsdale Unified School District, including Arcadia High, Ingleside Middle School, Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center, and Hopi and Tavan Elementary Schools. There are 45 active members and over 170 lifers, grande and honorary members of the Charros. Through the Charro Foundation, the organization has awarded over $200,000 in donations, grants and scholarships to the local community in the past five years alone. This includes future teacher scholarships, awarded to Arcadia High seniors who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree in education at an Arizona university. Arcadia seniors Cassandra Stewart and Tierney Turelli are the most recent recipients of the award. The Charros also provided three Master’s in Education Fellowships to teachers working at Arcadia High School to continue their education at the Mary Lou Fulton Teacher’s College at ASU, as well as education grants to help with technology related projects, equipment and programs in the classroom. Much of these scholarships and grants are made possible by the constant fundraising of the Charros. “Spring training is our primary fundraising event. It is a year-long endeavor that requires all active Scottsdale Charros and many Lifers and Grande Charros to commit a lot of hours and hard work to accomplish,” said Dan Postal, patron (president) of the Charros. “Fortunately, we have great partners in the City of Scottsdale and the San Francisco Giants organization, as well as an amazing staff to help us stay on track. While it is a large endeavor, it is incredibly fun and there is no better spring training location than Scottsdale Stadium.” The Scottsdale Charros are all about giving back and making a difference, and members are able to be personally involved in the fundraising and outreach efforts. “The best part about being a member of the Scottsdale Charros is the opportunity to give back,” said Matt White, 2016 Baseball Chairman and Charros Liaison to Arcadia High School. “Our goal continues to be centered around community involvement, whether it’s working with the Scottsdale Unified School District with our teacher and student initiatives, or donating funds to a number of different local charities.” Charros’ longtime support of Arcadia schools continues on The Scottsdale Charros have awarded over $200,000 in donations, grants and scholarships in 5 years.
