Page 50 January 2016 By Rachael Bouley There may not be many student swimmers at Veritas Preparatory Academy, but the members of the high school swim team make quite the impression anyway, as seen in the fall 2015 season, the third year of the program. The team, coached by Bill Wheeler, has three boys and twelve girls on the roster. This number seems quite small compared to other schools, but it makes sense considering the school has a small population to begin with, and then there are other athletic programs that attract students, such as football, cross country and volleyball. This past season, the team’s dedicated swimmers proved themselves to be quite competitive. At the 2015 Eagle Invitational, the 200-meter relay team – comprised of Anna Jackson, Justine Marbach, Sinead Murphy and Katie Higgins – set a meet record and qualified for the state meet. They went on to finish third at state and earned a medal. Also at the Eagle Invitational, Alex Fuentes and Justine Marbach were awarded Rookie of the Meet accolades, and Higgins won the 100-meter butterfly with a meet record, as well as the 100-meter backstroke. For the state meet, five swimmers qualified for eight individual events and two relays. Katie Higgins defended her championship in the 100-meter butterfly, and overall, the girls team placed ninth. These are just some of the team’s impressive accomplishments from the past season, and they look forward to achieving more in the future. The team, which has a mix of club swimmers and students who only swim during high school season, will hopefully gain a few freshman participants next year to continue to develop the team. “Next year will be an exciting year for us,” Wheeler said. “I’m thinking that we’re going to have pretty much all of our girls back, and probably get a couple good surprises.” Coach Wheeler says that he hopes to one day have a team that attracts students to come to Veritas. The atmosphere on the team is definitely a draw. By doing things together, it’s easier for the students to bond and truly become a team, regardless of skill or experience level. “Together as a group, it’s a very positive environment,” he said. “Everybody is cheering on everybody else, encouraging everyone else. It’s a real super positive group of kids. I encourage the kids to learn by watching what the other kids do.” According to Wheeler, one reason that the team is so successful is that the students are teachable, coachable and smart. He said he’s in awe of some of their academic accomplishments at such a young age. Even though the roster number is small, with the support of their peers, coaches, parents and the entire Veritas community, the team thrives. “For a very, very small team, they have done tremendously well,” says Keith Zaborski, the athletic director at Veritas. “I am proud of these athletes, as they practice at 6 a.m. each morning and then go to school. The team has great chemistry and are a lot of fun to be around. All of the Veritas athletic teams have great support, not only from the student-athletes but also from the parents, coaches and administration. Veritas may be a small school but we have a lot of heart and energy in everything our students do.” Veritas is confident in the swim team’s future. “We would ideally like to add a few more male swimmers and perhaps a diver or two to drastically increase our chances of winning a team state title,” Zaborski said. “We believe we have a strong foundation, and with the addition of a couple more swimmers, the sky is the limit.” Small but mighty, Veritas swim team makes a splash Sinead Murphy, Justine Marbach, Alex Fuentes, Katie Higgins and Anna Jackson. Redefining Swim Lessons since 1998 Page 51 January 2016 By Josh Cutlip Five Arcadia High School students participated in the school’s signing day on December 11 in front of the school cafeteria, as the seniors signed their letters of intent for college. Matti Harrison (Harvard, Swim), Sam Huff (Grand Canyon University, Baseball), Antonio Ramirez (Ohio State University, Swim), Megan Reniewicki (Arizona State University, Cross-Country and Track), and Kara Woodard (Arizona State University, Sand Volleyball) were all honored at a luncheon at Arcadia High School to a crowd of families and friends as they signed their letters of intent to their respective universities. Vice Principal and Athletic Director Kevin Mooney said this is the fourth year student athletes have been celebrated. “Certainly we want to honor any student athlete who will be participating in athletics at the next level.” Mooney also talked about the rigorous lifestyle of a student athlete, balancing hours of practice on top of maintaining attractive grades. “We may never produce a professional athlete, but we want every single person that comes here to graduate,” said Mooney. “This particular group of students is high- achieving academically as well as athletically.” Matti Harrison, who has swam for 14 years, is no stranger to balancing schoolwork with her time in the water. She utilizes her planner to stay afloat with her grades. “I just have to be super organized and disciplined with everything or else I’ll be behind in something,” said Harrison. Kara Woodard is also someone who is not afraid of hard work, whether it’s in the classroom or on the court. She played indoor volleyball for seven or eight years, but at the start of her junior year she switched to sand volleyball. “Luckily ASU had a beach volleyball team,” said Woodard. “It is a lot harder, which I like. I like a challenge.” Even with good grades, no athlete can get to the signing table without a strong coach in their corner. Megan Reniewicki has had a successful experience running at Arcadia, and having her father as a coach makes it all the more special. “I’ve had a great time, especially being with my dad, because he’s been the coach of both of my sports,” said Reniewicki. Harrison also attributes much of her success to her coaches, “Coach McClurg at Arcadia and my coach Mike Maczuga at club have both helped me throughout my career.” Although the recruiting process can be extensive and can bring about many tough decisions, Harrison had her eyes set on Harvard from the beginning. “That was actually the only school I applied to because I had been in the recruiting process for a really long time. I was looking at other schools to swim at, but I just knew Harvard was the place for me.” The five student-athletes come from an array of different sports, and Mooney expects to have more students honored in the spring semester around the national college decision day. “Every different sport provides a unique opportunity for students to participate,” said Mooney. “You’re proud of not only the skills that they have, but the fact they develop that skill to a point where they can compete at the next level.” Even with a full semester left of school, the thought of competing in a collegiate program generates excitement for all of these athletes. “There’s so much help that you’re getting, it’s just awesome,” said Reniewicki. “I’m looking forward to working with the coaches and the girls who are on the team, so I’m really excited.” Matti Harrison (Harvard) Sam Huff (Grand Canyon University) Kara Woodard (ASU) Megan Reniewicki (ASU) Antonio Ramirez (Ohio State) From ASU to Harvard, student athletes commit to their future
