By Garrison Murphy Elena Pierson, a 2015 Arcadia High School graduate, believes bullying is an issue most students have faced at some point in their academic career. She attributes part of the problem to the way bullying is addressed in many schools. “With bullying throughout elementary school and throughout middle school, you are always taught to ‘step up,’ and it’s not very proactive,” Pierson said. “If you are being outgoing, you are kind of on a platform for people to judge and ridicule you for what you love.” This knowledge drove her to help create anti-bullying campaigns and organizations at Arcadia High School, such as Kindness Week – a week dedicated to spreading kindness throughout the school. “It’s so much easier to be kind,” Pierson said. “All it takes is a smile to make someone’s day.” Pierson’s work led her to win an award for students who perform well academically, overcome bullying and are leaders in the fight against bullying. The award is part of an anti-bullying campaign called All Equal, sponsored by the National Society of High School Scholars, Hollister – a popular clothing brand – and the band Echosmith. Ten current college freshmen have received the award for the 2016 school year. Pierson received hers in May. This award isn’t the only recognition Pierson received. Arcadia students selected her to be the class president during her senior year and she has spoken at many school-wide assemblies. She also hosted a daily talk show, One on One with Elena Pierson , on the school’s broadcast news show. She was also a leadership camp counselor and has conducted an anti- bullying curriculum targeted toward middle school students. Due to her involvement and dedication to implementing positive change at Arcadia High School, assistant principal of student services, Kevin Mooney, called her the “heart and soul of Arcadia High School.” “She was one of the most positive people we had on campus,” Mooney said. “Five years from now the campus will be a better place because [of her work here].” Outside of school, Elena was involved in many activities such as traveling to Japan as the Phoenix Sister City youth ambassador. She also was involved in the production of the MTV television show, If You Really Knew Me . Pierson is currently a freshman at American University and is majoring in broadcast journalism with a minor in anthropology. Arisbeth Covarrubias is a student at Northern Arizona University and graduated high school with Pierson. Covarrubias said she met Pierson through student government and considers her a close friend. Covarrubias also earned the same award and scholarship. “She was willing to do anything without getting anything in return,” Covarrubias said about Pierson. “She was always willing to take time out of her day and help out.”
