The world had experienced two terror attacks within a period of a month. I was angry. I was losing faith in humanity. Like many of you, I’m raising children in the year 2015. The hatred I see on television, the fear imposed by current events, and the presidential nominees all trying to outdo each other with absurdities had me feeling a constant roller coaster of negative emotions. On this particular morning I was presenting the Arcadia News Teachers We Love award. Normally my favorite thing to do each month, I was having a tough time shaking the gloominess looming over me like a dark, heavy cloud . I walked into the school. I waited my turn to introduce myself and watched as a steady stream of parents exited the building. I learned that the school spelling bee had just ended and congratulations were being spread around to the smiling adults, each wearing a proud badge of honor, knowing their child had done well at a monumental task. My mood began to brighten, just a tiny bit, but it was something. Once the parents dispersed , the school principal approached me. Margaret Serna has served as principal to Tavan Elementary School for 18 years. Her passion is contagious and honestly, surprising, after so many years in an education system that some Americans feel with all certainty is broken. Serna’s joy as she walked at a rapid pace down the walkways of the campus radiated through her smile, she greeted children by name and stopped to correct their chaotic line formations, while also pointing out their strengths. “I love the hands behind your backs,” she encouraged the little kindergarteners. “This class is so good you must be first-graders!” The children beamed. This woman knew what she was doing. Serna was ecstatic that we were honoring one of her teachers. She raced around to each of the fifth-grade classes, requesting an audience of peers to witness the award ceremony. “She’s going to be so excited. So, so happy,” Serna explained over and over. “I’m so happy you’re doing this!” This woman had energy to burn. It was captivating to watch. Presenting Mrs. Rose, a fifth-grade teacher at Tavan, with the Arcadia News Teachers We Love award brought tears to my eyes, as well as smiles to the faces of the 25 students sitting in her classroom . The 10- and 11-year-old children cheered. One asked if he could hold a sign over Rose’s head that said amazing, as I took her photo . Rose’s fellow teachers hugged her tight, congratulating her and whispering to her that she was so deserving. My heart swelled. There is no question why this is my favorite part of my job. This one simple act reminded me that there is true good in this world. We have teachers who give of their time, their money and their heart, even when odds are stacked against them. In our little community we have a school principal who has spent almost two decades giving her job all she has, while also mentoring numerous vice principals who are now successfully running their own schools throughout the Valley. And that one child, the boy who asked if he could hold the amazing sign over his teacher’s head … he made me believe in our children and our future.
