But there is one I hold onto. I have a great admiration for my grandfather. He was a solid human being who always did what was right, worked hard, paid his debts and loved his family. He was a simple man but a good man . And although I adore my memory of him – the moments I had with him, the photo that sits on my bedside table of him holding me as a baby – there is something missing. I know very little about the man he was before he was Papa. The older I get, the more it haunts me. I know he was born to parents who died when he was young. He and his three siblings were taken to a Catholic orphanage, where nuns raised them for some time, before family members came and retrieved the children. I believe the siblings were separated, yet somehow remained close. I know at some point my grandparents met. My grandfather was in the Navy. Grandma waited for him. They were married 13 years before they had their first child. They had three children and lived in San Diego, in the same home for over 50 years. But that’s about it. There are bits and pieces. There are things we’ve discovered over the years: photos, slips of paper with memories written on them. My favorite was two sentences my mom and I found on the back of a hotel receipt. Turns out the receipt was for the hotel they stayed at on their wedding night, the night before my grandfather was shipped out to sea. Without her notes, we would have never known why she’d kept a sixty five year old receipt. I know my grandfather owned an intricately cared for record collection which consists of a variety of Japanese imports. I believe they came from his time in the Navy. But I’m really not sure. The problem is, my grandparents spoiled their grandchildren. Not with material items but with love and attention. We were the absolute center of their universe. Life was about us, not about them. And by the time I was old enough to ask important questions, to know that I wanted to write about their life and their memories…their memories were fading away. I sat one afternoon with Papa, on the stool at his feet. He was in his mid-80s and well into his battle with dementia. I was making frequent trips from my Los Angeles apartment to their San Diego home. I felt him slipping away from me and I now understand that I was grasping for anything I could get, trying to find out who he was when he wasn’t being the best man I’d ever know. I asked him questions. He stared at me, with love and defeat. “How’s Craig,” he asked about my husband, as if telling me my questions had to end. My heart broke because the reality was I’d never know where he’d been and all the things that led him here. And I had to accept that. He has been gone almost eight years now and I miss him every single day. This past September, Pope Francis visited the United States. Regardless of what you believe or what religion you follow, there was something he said that I find worth sharing. “Take care of the grandparents… Grandparents are the living memory of the family.” It is for this reason that I write. To honor the people. To tell the stories. To keep records of people doing big, small and remarkable things. To keep their lives, alive. Forever. Have a wonderful November, Arcadia. And thank you for reading Arcadia News. EDITOR’S NOTES
