Assefa, Sinke and their three children fled oppression and harassment in their homeland of Ethiopia in 2006. Although they settled into a comfortable life in Arizona – obtaining their citizenship and remaining employed – owning a home of their own remained out of reach. But that’s about to change thanks to a special partnership between local health club The Madison Improvement Club, its nonprofit the Swanson Family Foundation, and Habitat for Humanity. In September, more than 375 volunteers consisting of The Madison Improvement Club members and staff, along with area residents, started building a single-family home for the Guta/Aligel family near 42nd and Van Buren Streets. The one-story, three-bedroom house is scheduled to be completed by mid-December – just in time for the holidays. “I believe it is our responsibility to give back to the community who supports our business so well,” said The Madison Improvement Club co-founder Andrew Valera. “Habitat is such a great organization and it has been one of the best experiences building this house with all of the Madison members.” The Madison’s nonprofit, the Swanson Family Foundation, donated the plot Family to receive new home in time for the holidays Continued on page 30 The Madison Improvement Club works alongside Habitat for Humanity to build a new home for a local family.
