At Arcadia High, one club is known, not for its specific club interest in politics or sports but rather, for kindness. The Arcadia High School Student Advisory Board (ASAB) was established in 2011 as a student-led club. It has one of the school’s highest populations for clubs and organizations. Being student-led, the teachers overseeing ASAB are doing just that: helping enforce mandates and brainstorm strategies, while allowing students to be the creative minds behind the club’s wheelhouse. Every student of Arcadia is welcome to be part of this club and must go through a stringent application process, including staff recommendations and an interview by current ASAB students. Prospective students must be on board with the mission of ASAB. ASAB’s mission is simple: promote kindness. The members of ASAB focus their efforts on promoting kindness towards students and teachers alike. ASAB believes they can better their school by changing people’s attitudes towards one another through kindness and education. They encourage acceptance of diversity and promote cultural awareness while hoping to improve the community of AHS, which in and of itself is a highly diverse school. In an effort to establish cultural awareness, ASAB created signs of greetings and thoughtful messages in different languages during Arcadia’s Cultural Week by working with the foreign language teachers. Another event the club promoted on campus was solely focused on the appreciation of Arcadia’s teachers. Educators received notes of appreciation written by students, which left the staff feeling not only encouraged, but also valued. ASAB takes pride in being a crusader of encouragement at Arcadia High School’s campus. One reward for the students of ASAB is being part of a group filled with like-minded people who are all committed to optimism. Club advisor to ASAB and U.S. history teacher, Jeff King sees this club “as a reflection of the school at large.” King said Arcadia is a diverse school and ASAB represents the school’s socioeconomic and ethnic diversity. He went on to explain that ASAB is a mix and mash of different groups. “I really think students want to be a part of ASAB so they can feel involved in a close-knit community of people. They will leave their mark, not personally but as a large group effort. This isn’t something to show off on your resume, you have to put effort into it. Participants need to be highly involved and not passive,” said King.
