When Cheney got out of the Air Force, he was introduced to his mentor, longtime friend and tennis professional Fred Earle. Earle taught Cheney how to teach tennis and how to be a supportive coach. Earle taught tennis until he was 92 and Cheney hopes he can teach just as long. Cheney said, “I want to do what I’m passionate about for as long as I can.” In 1976, Cheney started teaching tennis at Camelback Village Racquet & Health Club. He recalled how wonderful it was to watch The Village progress from a little club into the multilocation, well- established company that it is now. Cheney has won countless titles and has won world championships, but he says that one of the highlights was when he was ranked number one for 30-and-over and number one for 40-and-over in the same year. Cheney still competes to this day, on an International Cup team for seniors and has gained a spot on the competitive team over 23 times. Cheney said, “There are a number of students that I’ve taught who now have me coaching their own kids. It’s a great location, it’s a great club and it’s always been a family club. It doesn’t seem possible that 38 1/2 years have already gone by.” On Friday, January 30, 2015 the Camelback Village Health Club commemorated Cheney’s lifelong pursuit of the love of tennis as they celebrated his 39 years of being tennis director and announced his title change to tennis pro emeritus. Cheney participated in a passing of the torch ceremony to Will White as the new tennis director. Cheney stated, “Will is a very accomplished tennis professional and has some great ideas and things he is going to Coach Continued from page 50 implement, and I can’t wait to see how the program grows.” Cheney will continue to teach at The Village for as long as his body will allow him. Cheney also says that he is proud to have his wife Anne’s support through all of these years and he’s glad that he is able to share his love of tennis with his five kids, four of which reside in Arizona. Cheney says, “You have to enjoy tennis. You better like what you do if you’re spending 70 hours per week at the club.
