Page 32 January 2015 New Year’s resolutions versus go get ‘em goals By Lisa Weisenburger I recently read a statistic that, while not necessarily surprising, was a bit hard to swallow. Forbes magazine quoted research from the University of Scranton that stated just 8 percent of people achieve their New Year’s resolutions. That means 92 percent of us don’t. I don’t know whether the people in the study referred to kids, teenagers, adults or all of the above. Regardless, we have to do better people! My approach to 2015 will focus not on resolutions but on goals. Setting an attainable goal sounds so much more fun than creating a resolution. A resolution in my mind is what not to do. For example, “We resolve to never eat fried foods.” For 2015 we plan to say, “We will only eat fried foods once a month.” For my kids to be successful and not be part of the 92 percent, we need a solid plan measurable, action oriented, realistic and timely. The old familiar resolution of “We will exercise more as a family,” for 2015 will be “We will ride our bikes together in our beautiful Arcadia neighborhood two times a week and hike the 32nd Street trailhead twice a month as a family.” action oriented, realistic and timely. This goal setting and planning needs visual aids. We like lists and charts and Post- it notes in our house. We like technology, too, but sometimes there is nothing better than chalk and a swatch of chalkboard paint. For our 2015 goals, we decided to make mini books, one for each family goal. Not being savvy at scrapbooking, I stumbled upon this clever use of coffee sleeves as mini books and I love it! They are quick and easy to make as well as recycled and repurposed. Check out the Fiskarscraft’s YouTube video for a simple tutorial on how to make these mini books. Page 33 January 2015 Fear not diehard fans, new name, location for Carmel’s By Kassidy McDonald On Sunday, November 9 the locally owned and operated Carmel’s Coffee and Bakery on 42nd Street and Camelback Road closed its well-known shop. The shop owned by Patrick Flanigan was named after his late mother, Carmel. Best known for its local coffee, home-style breakfast and lunch menu, and the ambiance that comes with an eatery contained in a 1940s vintage house, the shop which was once awarded the “Best New Restaurants” title by Phoenix Magazine has bigger plans in store. Carmel’s former location was torn down, along with the other restaurants and shops such as Havana Café and Camelback Flowers in Camelback Court. Bill Levine from Levine Investments Limited Partnership bought the .9 acre of land in January 2014 for $2,720,037. LGO hospitality has plans to open a new restaurant in the demolished Camelback Court location; construction has yet to start. Carmel’s is moving half a block away, south of Camelback on the west side of the street to 4730 N. 44th St. The location is being remodeled from an Arcadia home on 44th Street to a neighborhood restaurant. The new restaurant will be named Charlie Fine. It will serve the same breakfast menu offered at Carmel’s, but will expand to include a lunch, dinner and alcohol menu as well. According to Debi Bridges from Bridges Media Group, who is handling public relations for Charlie Fine, “Patrick Flanigan, owner of Carmel’s Coffee, is excited to open up Charlie Fine which will offer a larger location and full menu, expanding to more than just breakfast and coffee.” Bridges also stated that Charlie Fine is expected to open in the beginning of February. There will be events to kick off the grand opening. Follow Carmel’s on Facebook at facebook.com/CarmelsCoffee news about the opening of Charlie Fine. This home on 44th Street will soon be Charlie Fine.
