Page 20 November 2014 By Larissa Garza Seventy years after D-Day, the Herding family traveled to Normandy, France in June to get a hands-on learning experience for their son about the history of D-Day and other World War II events. The main reason for this trip was to visit Normandy on the 70th anniversary of D-Day because their son, Carson Herding, 9, is a big fan of anything WWII, said Keri Herding, Carson’s mother. “Every chance we get we want to encourage and inspire his desire to learn about WWII,” said Keri. On the trip, Carson bought a D-Day poster that numerous WWII veterans would sign when he met them throughout the trip. “They would sign it and put where they were during D-Day on the picture,” said Carson. When asked about his favorite part of the trip, Carson said, “Meeting the survivors.” Carson would approach the veterans and talk to them on his own. It is nice that someone so young is interested in who they are and their stories, said Keri Herding. “It lets their legacy live on,” said Keri. The Herding family even met a WWII veteran, Rich Winters, who was one of the men who paratrooped onto Normandy beach on D-Day. While on Normandy beach, there was a reenactment of paratroopers jumping down onto the beach. Passion for history takes Arcadia family to Normandy “It gave me the chills just looking at it,” said Keri. Carson’s father, Mark Herding, also enjoyed meeting the many WWII veterans. “It’s amazing because there are not that many left. In five years there will be even less,” he said. The family visited Pointe Du Hoc where they saw barricades and bunkers. “Carson went into a bunker and popped out 30-60 yards away from where he went in,” said Mark. The Herding family also visited Omaha and Utah beaches, one of the many places that the Americans helped fight Germany. Omaha and Utah are the two more commonly known beaches because the Germans could fight back here with heavy artillery, Mark explained. At one of the beaches, Carson said he found “sunken landing craft still in the water.” Another stop on their trip was made at the Memorial on Omaha Beach and the American cemetery where they met many dignitaries. Carson is interested in anything WWII and even watches the military channel to learn more. “To have him soak it all in after watching Christ Church In Christ We Grow That Others May Know LC-MS Lutheran Sunday Worship 8:00 & 10:45 A.M. –Traditional 8:30 & 10:30 A.M. –Contemporary 12:30 P.M. –Spanish Service Wednesday Worship 7:00 P.M. The Herding family also visited Pearl Harbor for the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor a few years ago. “It was a very special trip for us,” said Keri. With his parents, Carson Herding visited WWII monuments and men who saw battle. 9:00 a.m. Traditional | 9:00 a.m. Sunday School 10:30 a.m. “Come As You Are” Contemporary 3641 N. 56th Street, Phoenix • 480-945-9537 • www.popphoenix.org Northeast corner of 56th St. and Indian School Discover POP Preschool POP Preschool POP Preschool If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, “thank you,” that would suffice. ~ Meister Eckhart • Ages 2-5 • Well-qualified, loving and experienced Teachers • Christian curriculum and Chapel every Tuesday • Enrichment classes including Spanish, Taekwondo, Art & Music • A/C gymnasium that is used as our Summer Playground • Flexible scheduling options, with half and full-day programs • Excellent Pre-Kindergarten program using Creative Curriculum
