Most people learn about these places in a classroom, but nothing brings history to life like getting up close and personal with the places that make up the fabric of our country. In honor of Independence Day, AAA travel experts have compiled a list of patriotic points of interest from AAA TourBook guides to incorporate into your next vacation. Pearl Harbor (Hawaii) The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor left over 2,400 Americans dead and another 1,200 wounded. It also precipitated the entry of the United States into World War II. Today, this still-active naval base is home to several museums and memorials including the Battleship Missouri Memorial, Pacific Aviation Museum, Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum, the USS Arizona Memorial and the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park. Here, visitors can pay their respects to the fallen and all who fought and served in WWII. Admission to the Pacific National Monument and USS Arizona Memorial are free. Fees vary for other historic sites. USS Midway (California) Located in downtown San Diego at Navy Pier, the Midway was the longest-serving U.S. Navy carrier of the 20th century and largest ship in the world for 10 years. Arlington National Cemetery (Virginia) Arlington National Cemetery is made up of seemingly endless rows of simple, white headstones. Among those buried are President John F. Kennedy, first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, President William Howard Taft and Chief Justice Earl Warren. It is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the burial site for an unknown American soldier brought back from France after World War I, as well as unknown American military personnel from World War II and the Korean War. Specially selected members of the Army’s 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment guard the tomb 24 hours a day. Tours are $8.75 for adults and $4.50 for children. Mount Rushmore (South Dakota) Come face to face with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln at this national memorial. Created under the direction of Gutzon Borglum, each face on Mount Rushmore is 60 feet high and carved with intricate detail and expression. The memorial represents the distinctive

The best views are available from the Grand View Terrace or along the Presidential Trail. There is no entrance fee, but parking costs $11 per vehicle. Pikes Peak (Colorado) Located west of Denver, the 14,110- foot summit of Pikes Peak is visible from a long distance on the Great Plains. The view inspired Katherine Lee Bates to write “America the Beautiful” in 1893. The summit can be reached by highway or cog railway. Pike National Forest has many developed campgrounds and ample opportunities for fishing and hiking. Scenic drives include the Rampart Range Road and the Pikes Peak Highway. It is free to enter the park. Yellowstone (Wyoming, Montana and Idaho) The Crow American Indians named this place “land of the burning ground.” The Blackfeet called it “many smoke.” Western explorers described fantastical scenes of “fire and brimstone.” Folks back home didn’t believe the tales until artist Thomas Moran and photographer William Henry Jackson brought back proof in 1871 — giving birth to America’s first national park. Covering 2.2 million acres in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, three million people visit the national park each year to hike, fish and camp in the backcountry, and make the pilgrimage to see Old Faithful. The park sits atop one of the largest active volcanoes on earth, a “hot spot” that last erupted some 640,000 years ago. Entrance fees cost $25 per vehicle. These are just a handful of places that played an integral role in shaping America into the great nation it is today — the full list stretches from sea to shining sea. No matter your domestic vacation destination, pay homage to our country’s past by adding a patriotic place to your next travel itinerary.
