CALL US LAST! Titan’s design wins Valley Metro Transit Wrap Competition By Kathleen Shipman Valley Metro recently held their 14th Annual Design a Transit Wrap Competition, where the top three contestants all came from Arcadia High School. This event called for students all over the valley to create an artistic logo, which would help spread awareness about the importance of public transportation. The winner of the contest is awarded the honor of having their design featured on a bus and a light rail for a year. It was Senior John Reniewicki who received the grand prize, with Tia Schmittenberg and Sophie Lindemann, named as the next two runner ups. “I am very proud of them,” said Principal John Biera. “In the history of the program, this is the first time that the first three winners come from one school… That speaks volumes about Arcadia High School.” The students initially learned about the competition from their Advertising Art Teacher Dianna Cure. Reniewicki, who will be studying graphic design next year at ASU, decided to apply his knowledge of advertising to his artwork. The top half of his wrap design contains the slogan, “Ride On with Valley Metro.” He chose the color turquoise as the background to represent the Native American history of Arizona. The bottom of the logo has the appearance of the Arizona flag, containing silhouettes of different types of people riding the bus. “What our teacher always tells us to do when we are making our designs is to think of a story, what you are trying to get across with your design,” said Reniewicki. “It shows that all walks of life have come together on Valley Metro Transportation.” The other two designs chosen to be in the top three were also very creative, containing positive messages as well. Schmittenberg placed second for her artwork, which carried the tagline, “You’re in Good Hands with Valley Metro.” Lindemann, who was selected as the third place winner, had the logo, “Greener Rides for Bluer Skies.” The goal of this annual event is to promote the use of public transportation. By opening the competition to high school students, Valley Metro has the hopes of spreading this idea to the younger generations. “As young people change their habits and drive less, public transit is only going to become more important to the vitality of our city. This contest is an excellent way to engage our transit riders of the future,” said Phoenix City Councilwoman (Left to right) Senior Tia Schmittenberg, Senior John Reniewicki, Senior Sophie Lindemann, winners of the 14th Annual Design a Transit Wrap Competition. Thelda Williams, Valley Metro Rail Board Member. This year there were more than 120 students who entered the Design a Transit Wrap Competition, coming from a total of 20 different schools. Having all three of the winners selected from the same school was a remarkable occurrence. On April 24, a ceremony took place at Arcadia High School to pay tribute to the students and also present them with cash awards. The highlight of the event took place when the actual bus containing Reniewicki’s design was driven onto the campus. In addition, they unveiled a picture of the decorated light rail. “This certainly is very positive, not only for our school but for our community,” said Principal Biera. “You just think about all the visitors who will come to the Valley of the Sun and get on the bus or light rail and will see Arcadia High School, Scottsdale Unified School District, John Reniewicki. You talk about marketing beyond your school’s walls, that’s it.”
