Page 46 June 2 0 1 4 Senior center provides many options By Jean Hodgson Somewhere around 1990 I participated in an aerobics class taught by a friend at the Devonshire Senior Center. At that time I remember the facility consisting of a small lobby, a multipurpose room where the class was held, a classroom, and some offices. Since then I never had a reason to be back in the building even though I live nearby and drive by it regularly. But now with my retirement becoming a reality and realizing this center would be a natural place to start identifying community resources in Arcadia to share with you, I visited the facility at 2802 East Devonshire Avenue. Fast-forward to a place I would have never recognized compared to twenty plus years ago and I find myself front and center in a building humming with activity. Join me on a little virtual tour - but one that you really must take in person if you’re not already familiar with this place and the vast array of services it offers. The first impression is very welcoming as I was greeted by various staff members and all sorts of printed information on display to acquaint you with the Center. People were engaged in a variety of activities in the large common room: a fitness center with several exercise machines, tables with card and chess games, Scrabble, jigsaw puzzles in progress, and several WEEKLY SUMMER CAMPS! This is in addition to individuals reading or just visiting with others. Then I heard the music coming from a large activity room. It was a Wednesday, the afternoon when the weekly dance takes place, with music provided by a live band. This dance is included in a list of about a dozen ongoing daily activities and is obviously a popular time for socialization. The calendar also advertises special events every month, and I saw a sample in action that day. An area was set up with computer stations with AARP Tax Aide available to a large group of people taking advantage of this free service. In May members enjoyed a Senior Prom, and June will include a Father’s Day Party and an Ice Cream Social. A multipurpose room was in the process of being reset for the next day’s meal service, another helpful option for morning snack, a healthy breakfast (Tuesdays only), or a daily lunch - all for a very reasonable contribution. Reservations are required and a monthly menu and other details are readily available. A series of classrooms (including a computer lab) provide space for a huge listing of offerings: fitness classes, yoga, art classes, meditation, computer basics, and even offerings for youth in gymnastics and ballet. This is only a small sampling, so be sure to check out the complete list in person or online at phoenix.gov/parks. This virtual tour doesn’t even include field trips, specialized support services, and transportation, but a membership of $10 for one year for Phoenix residents ($20 for non- residents) opens so many doors. A staff member explained to me that the goal is to not only offer programs and activities, but a welcoming spot for Arcadia’s senior adults that builds relationships. She called it “Devonshire Senior Center...a place where everybody knows your name.” (Right) At a recent luncheon at Christ Lutheran Church, Jean Hodgson discussed the Devonshire Senior Center with friends.
