Page 52 March 2014 New Way Academy grows to serve more When a little-known Valley school needed some extra hands preparing a new school location, many volunteer groups stepped up to assist, including the SRP Volunteers. The school moved into larger quarters in Northeast Phoenix near Oak and 50th Street to serve a growing population of students with learning differences. The volunteer effort involved painting the white-walled lower and middle school classrooms in brain-based colors, so the students can focus. In each room, a primary wall was painted in a pale teal while the side walls were done in sand tones. “Supporting students, teachers and overall education is a key SRP focus area. It has been great to work for an employer who supports my involvement in key community initiatives. We know that strong education programs make for a strong community and improves the area’s economic vitality,” said Ann S. Brown, SRP event coordinator and New Way The school, the New Way Academy, has a 45-year history of helping students with dyslexia, ADHD and other learning differences learn. (In fact, an estimated 56,000 learning challenged students live in Arizona.) Its students are like all others, except that many of them have fallen through the cracks of mainstream education because they were not taught in a way they could learn. Many are gifted but simply need multi-sensory, small classroom or other types of instruction in a nurturing environment. It is a K-12 school, led by a bright, young team: Executive Director, Abbey Ross and Head of School, Michael Walker. The pair of former teachers and now leaders, along with passionate and specially-accredited teachers, are helping their students defy the odds and exceed academic expectations. They connect SRP employee and Volunteer Coordinator for this project, Ann Savage Brown, is supported by a group of SRP Volunteers while they take a short break from painting. with the students using hands-on, assistive technology and progressive teaching methods. Success is apparent as all of the high school graduates continue their education in some way beyond New Way Academy. With the larger campus, New Way Academy now is open for enrollment to accept more students. For more information or to visit the new campus, visit www.newwayacademy.org. Page 53 March 2014 Endless Love Director: Shana Feste Starring: Gabriella Wilde, Alex Pettyfer, and Bruce Greenwood Wrought with clichés, Endless Love is not worth the ticket fee or the two hours. (Wilde) and David Elliot (Pettyfer) had never spoken during their high school years but would embark on a journey as young lovers. Endless Love follows the novel by Scott Spencer and the 1981 similarities to its predecessors end there. Jade was a typical sheltered teen, who didn’t have any friends, and spent all her time with her family or with her nose in a book. David had always imagined what they would be like together but never worked up the courage to talk to her. After graduation, they run into each other and click instantly. However, Jade’s father (Greenwood) disapproves of the match from the start, and does everything he can to try to keep the troublemaker away New version of 80s classic fails to excite movie goers from his daughter. Determined not to be separated, Jade and David try to change her dad’s mind before it’s too late. This remake was vastly different than the two protagonists to the events of their story. It’s a wonder the new movie kept the same name, considering how much was altered. Instead of the drama that incited out the more intense parts of the plot and glosses over the rest to make way for the changes. Among the many stereotypes it follows is the idea that people who are quiet and reserved, choose to read instead of go to parties, must be that way against their will and just need someone to save them from their repressed lives by unleashing the wild party girl hiding within. The character arc about David being the guy who gets in trouble frequently and looks towards his future of inheriting his dad’s mechanic shop instead of going to college is typical of movies like this one. Some aspects of the movie allude to a darker side, a more mysterious tale that could end in disaster, which would make it more interesting if the opportunity had been taken. Unfortunately, it seems a decision couldn’t be settled upon, whether the story would spiral into unpredictable territory or stick to the things done so many The hints of a more intense nature are just enough to show the audience the potential for a more exciting plot, but without going all the way and delivering. The writing of the movie makes it since they’re already working with the handicap of a barely adequate script. One use of the emotional range that people can naturally express, whether or not they’ve had professional training. ! "#$" % % though it’s R-rated and a bit disturbing, which makes it appealing in comparison already. Suggesting potential audiences to spend their time elsewhere, I give the new Endless Love a ½ star, mostly because the popcorn was good.
