Page 49 March 2014 Learning disability inspires Arcadia resident to teach By Michelle Donati-Grayman Whitney Stein found her passion while studying for her master’s of education degree at Arizona State University. Like many in her program, she thought she would end up in the classroom as a teacher. However, her focus narrowed when she realized that a critical learning disability was overlooked in the curriculum: dyslexia. Contrary to popular belief, dyslexia doesn’t mean you see things backwards. According to Stein, the brain of a dyslexic is wired differently, which affects overall language skills. Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability that is neurological in origin, according to the International Dyslexia Association. It is generally characterized            spelling. It is estimated that 15 to 20 percent of the U.S. population has the disability. “In a classroom of 30, that means as many as six children may be dyslexic,” Stein said. “It means they can’t learn the way they’re being taught.” Last year, Stein founded The Dyslexia Connection, an organization that offers one-on-one tutoring for children struggling with reading, writing and spelling as well as challenges associated with the learning disability. The organization also offers testing and advocacy services to           or need help connecting with appropriate resources. Sadly, the disability often goes undiagnosed in children.
