Page 31 September 2013 By Danika Worthington Brides-to-be are able to make their wedding day more special by buying their dream dress and donating to help those affected by cancer at the same time. Brides Against Breast Cancer, a charity Nationwide Tour of Gowns, will be held September 6-7 at the Sheraton Phoenix Airport Hotel in Tempe, 1600 S. 52nd Street. The two-day event sells discounted dresses to brides-to-be and raises $2 million to support programs and services for those impacted by cancer, according to organizers. The programs are free to those impacted by cancer and include Camp No Worries, Cancer Education Series and Ask the Doctor, according to the Brides Against Cancer Website. “It’s so amazing that we are able to help people impacted by cancer while also helping brides-to-be find gowns of their dreams and at a discounted price,” said tour manager Ashley Ritter. Designers, stores and former brides donated the gowns, which allowed Brides Against Breast Cancer to discount the dresses up to 85 percent, Ritter said. The average gown costs $600 and ranges from $99 to $3,500 and up. Dresses are sizes 0-24. The tour includes popular styles such as mermaid, lace and sweetheart necklines, as well as bridal accessories. Tour of Gowns helps brides-to-be and cancer patients “People that come to our event, not only are coming for the great deals, but they also have that connection. Most people that you meet have been impacted in someway by cancer unfortunately,” Ritter said. This was especially true in Portland, Oregon when a woman with cancer purchased a gown at the tour last year. “She had stage IV breast cancer and she wanted to be married quickly before she passed away. And she actually came back this past show and donated her wedding gown and she is cancer free,” Ritter said. On the Brides Against Breast Cancer website, people share their stories. “I have lost a grandfather to lung cancer. I have lost a cousin to breast cancer. Most recently I lost my stepfather to brain cancer who was like a father to me since he has been around most of my life,” Carey Runzel Oberly wrote. “I wanted to make someone else feel special. Just like I did in my dress. Someone who may not be able to afford it. Take one thing off their stress list. I saw this dress on the rack and said ‘Wow, that’s the one.’ I hope they do the same,” Oberly wrote. The event has been around for about 15 years and has grown from 35 to 120 cities, Ritter said. Arizona Bride will sponsor the Tempe event for the second time, said Arizona Bride editor Sarah Baumann. “What we do, you know our main thing is really giving ideas and inspiration to brides on a daily basis,” Baumann said. “So when we have the opportunity to turn that into something that can also help in a different way, help an entirely different set of people, that’s a really positive thing for us.” Arizona Bride will be promoting the event through social media and advertisements in their magazine. They will donate their magazines and annual resource guides for the gift bags, Baumann said. Brides Against Breast Cancer provides a layaway program that allows a bride 12 months to pay off their dress, Ritter said. Past brides are able to donate their dresses for a tax deduction. “Your wedding gown generally stays either packed in a box or in your closet. It takes up space,” Ritter said. “Why not give back, why not help those impacted by cancer, let your wedding gown live, make another bride-to-be happy at the same time?” A VIP Pink Power Hour reception will be 6 to 9 p.m. September 6, and costs $30 for the bride and a guest; $20 for additional guests. General admission to the 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. September 7 event is a $5 tax- deductible donation. More information is available at www. bridesagainstbreastcancer.org.
