Page 29 September 2013 By Katie Mayer When Sue Turner was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, the energetic and healthy nurse was shocked because no one in her family had ever had the disease. Then, when she found out she would need a mastectomy, she was scared and knew she needed to get a second opinion. “I couldn’t even catch a cold and there I was with cancer and I’d need a mastectomy,” Turner said. Through a recommendation from her doctor, Turner not only found a second opinion, she found a support network and a community of hope through the Arizona Institute for Breast Health. The organization offers women with breast cancer the chance to receive a second opinion from a consortium of breast cancer doctors, connects them with Annual Breast of Scottsdale finds new location, friends a patient advocate and offers them a wealth of support and resources – all for free. Today, Turner has been cancer free for a year and is now a volunteer AIBH board member and helping to organize the nonprofit’s upcoming signature fundraising event called the Pink Light District initiative, which starts October 3 and runs through the end of the month. The initiative kicks off September 10 with a pink-themed event called the Breast of Scottsdale at The Herb Box restaurant in downtown Scottsdale. This year’s Breast of Scottsdale event is offering creative pink-themed foods, colored naturally with beets. Some items on the menu include soft pretzel ribbons with horseradish beet dipping sauce, pink deviled eggs, pink champagne cupcakes and pink raspberry dossants, which is a popular menu item known as a cross between a doughnut and a croissant. “The Herb Box Chef Becky Windels always tries to use local and organic products wherever she can and she incorporated a lot of that as she was working on all these different ideas,” said Jennifer Velazquez, general manager of The Herb Box. For $25, participants can sponsor a pink light on the Marshall Way Bridge in honor of or in memory of anyone who has been touched by breast cancer and will be given access to attend the Breast of Scottsdale event, said Arizona Institute for Breast Health Executive Director Christine Fenwick. “The bridge glows with thousands of pink lights for the entire month of October,” Fenwick said. The Herb Box’s Velazquez said she is excited for the event – but not just because she is organizing it. She, too, has survived breast cancer, and this year marks two years since she has been cancer free. Velazquez has only worked at The Herb Box for three months since she moved to the Valley from Atlanta, but said she knew she had chosen the right place to work when she learned the restaurant supports the Arizona Institute for Breast Health. “I feel oddly blessed that through breast cancer I’ve met some of the most amazing women,” Velazquez said. “It’s very emotional.” As the event draws closer, organizers said they plan to have 100 to 150 attendees this year. This also is the number of patients that AIBH sees on average each year. “Our goal is to empower a woman so she has all the information she needs to make the right decision to deal with her breast cancer,” Fenwick said. “Sometimes that little bit of mentoring, or having someone who can help you and guide you – as horrific as the journey can be – it helps cushion it a bit.” For more information on Arizona Institute for Breast Health, the upcoming Pink Light District initiative and Breast of Scottsdale event visit www.aibh.org.
