Page 16 September 2013 By Julie Demetros For Hayley Trueman, joining the Broadway Artists’ Alliance in New York City for summer camp also meant learning how to be a New Yorker. “I thought that everyone was going to scream, ‘Get out of my way,’ but no one even noticed me,” said the Arcadia native. “I felt like a speck of dust.” The 12-year-old student at St. Theresa’s Catholic School took classes July 29 to August 2 at the Ripley Grier Studios in the heart of New York City from Tony-winning Broadway producers and performers. “We had two master classes a day and you got to select your classes,” she said. With about 160 students requesting classes, not everyone got their pick. “If there were too many, then they moved you to your second choice.” “I took a lot of vocal classes because I was a vocal major, but I should have picked more dance and acting classes now that I think of it.” Hayley’s teachers included Amadeus star and Tony-Award-winning producer Tom Hulce and Broadway performer Chris Sieber, who became one of her favorites. “He had awesome feedback, and he was so interactive with us,” she said. “He gave us a relatable example with a song that we sang, which was really helpful.” Along with learning about singing and Haley Trueman navigates New York for the summer while taking performance classes. acting, Hayley said she learned important lessons about competition and auditioning. “I learned that different casting directors and agents want different things.
