In the desert, Brophy finds success in the water By Lupita Juarez The Brophy crew team qualified in a four man boat for the U.S Rowing Youth National Championships in June. The four rowers qualified with an outstanding time of 6:47:612. The four qualifying rowers were senior and team captain Cole Garcia, senior Sean McMhon, junior Benjamin Crozier and junior Max Hall. This year marked Brophy’s seventh year of rowing and second year approval of being their own scholastic program. The Broncos rowed both fall and spring with 60 rowers, which included freshmen, sophomore, juniors and seniors. In early May, the boys trained all year for the regional championship held in Sacramento, CA in the Southwest Region. The four qualifiers rowed past two competitors in the last 700 meters of 2,000-meter race to take the bronze medal in a field of 20 boats. “Some of the Southwest teams have about 300 team members, where we sometimes only have 40-60, so competing against both scholastics and club teams can be challenging at times”, said Hall. And even though the team has made it to nationals in past years, this year they went into the Grand Final A, qualifying them into the Junior Nationals, which was their junior men’s quad race. “It wasn’t the easiest race,” Laity said. “We took the hardest path to get into the Grand Final because of some boat trouble, but well worth it at the end. “Sometimes it’s hard competing with teams with a lot of alternates and that have also been rowing together for years, so with a smaller team, it takes more team communication and mental engagement.” For Laity, the teams Coxswain, not only did his high GPA get him into UC Berkeley this Fall but his commitment and discipline to his Brophy Crew team also won him a spot on the Cal crew. “We want new faces,” Hall said. “We like to advertise rowing as a no-cut sport. “We like everyone to come give it a chance, and most kids like it and stick with it.” 7 SPORTS CAMP LOCATIONS one in your neighborhood Basketball, soccer, baseball, swimming, archery, volleyball wi`ëÀÌà ALL SUMMER LONG!
