Arcadian studies full year of Chinese in eight weeks By Kaley Kalil Arcadia resident Courtney Day O’Connor, 23, has spent some fun, quality time in China. O’Connor studies Chinese at Arizona State University in Tempe. Last summer, she spent two and a half months in Chengdu, the capital of the Sichuan province in Southwest China, participating in ASU’s Sichuan University Summer Language Program. “The program gave me the opportunity to take a full year of Chinese courses in just eight weeks,” O’Connor said. “In addition to going to class fi ve days a week, each student also had two-hour sessions with private tutors several times a week.” O’Connor lived in the Foreign Student Dormitory at Sichuan University and took a language pledge to speak only Chinese throughout her summer in Chengdu. “I speak Mandarin Chinese with a good degree of fl uency,” she said. “However, communication was sometimes challenging. There are seven major dialect groups of Chinese, and those are further split into subgroups. “Each dialect is basically a different language.
