Juarez This fall St. Theresa Catholic School will feel a little different and not because the kids grew 2 inches taller or the seasons changed, but because one of their campus favorites won’t be there. For 32 years, Melissa Allen reigned in the classroom dedicating time and patience to generations of children. “It’s so much fun” it didn’t feel that long, Allen said. In a school known for the longevity of its staff, Allen stands out. She is admired by administration, parents, faculty and especially her students for her sense of humor, sense of fairness and academic integrity. “She is fi rm yet funny, tough yet caring and has earned the respect from so many,” said Keri Herding, St. Theresa of fi ce manager. Allen’s journey began in the Diocese of Phoenix at St. Matthew’s in 1974. In 1981, she decided to go to St. Theresa Catholic, making it her home school. Her daughter, Laurie, began kindergarten there. Teaching partner Ann Lowry Howe and her former teacher assistant Marissa Wolf Knox, now a teacher at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, were in her third-grade class long before she mentored them to be teachers. Allen said mentoring and guiding these young ladies was among the things that make being a teacher memorable and special. Calling her way to communicate “straight talk,” Allen said her teaching style is all about nurturing, listening and inserting a bit of humor into the classroom.
