The department recommends creating a dispensable space between buildings and plants, which is a distance of at least 10 feet. Bruce Solomon, an employee at Baker Nursery on 40 th Street and Osborn Road, said clearing out freeze-damaged plants is important. “Maintain healthy plants. A lot of dead material just sits there,” he said. “It acts like tinder if a fi re is started.” Planting fi re-retardant plants during summer months also can help decrease the potential for a fi re, Solomon said.
