Page 19 June 2013 Symptoms can include: Severe pain on either side of your lower back; More vague pain or a stomach ache that doesn’t go away; Blood in the urine; Nausea or vomiting; Fever and chills; Urine that smells bad or looks cloudy. Dehydration isn’t the only cause of kidney stones. Others include too much or too little exercise, obesity, infections, weight-loss surgery, or eating food with too much salt or sugar. Eating too much protein might be related to uric acid stones. Sometimes the cause is linked to your genes. The rarest type of stone is a cystine stone that tends to run in families. If stones are small, you may only need pain relievers. Lithotripsy – shock wave treatment – can break large stones into tiny ones that you can pass. Surgery might be necessary in some cases. To stay hydrated and avoid kidney stones, the National Kidney Foundation recommends drinking more than 12 glasses of water a day. Water is better than soda, sports drinks, coffee or tea. If you exercise, or it’s hot outside, drink more. Claire Bowey, M.D., treats patients of all ages at Arcadia Family Clinic, 4131 N. 24th St., Suite B-102, Phoenix, 602-955- 6632 or JCL.com/practices.
