Page 44 May 2013 Biltmore Prep 8th-grader part of foreign travel group Submitted Biltmore Preparatory Academy eighth grader D’Anna Kashey recently participated in the Creighton School District’s Junior Ambassador international exchange program to Germany. After completing an extensive interview process, D’Anna was one of 12 students selected to participate in the program and spend two weeks living with a German family and traveling in Europe. Then, her German student exchange partner spent two weeks with her in Arizona. Highlights of the trip included attending a school in Mainz, Germany, as well as visits to Strasbourg, France, Austria, Munich, Neuschwanstein Castle, Linderhof Palace, and a river cruise on the Rhine. When the German students came to Arizona for two weeks, they traveled to the Grand Canyon, Tombstone, Sedona, Meteor Crater, Montezuma’s Castle, and the Petri fi ed Forest. On her trip, D’Anna, experienced new cultures and made lifelong friendships. She had not previously traveled overseas. “The lands were incredibly beautiful, especially the castles and the countryside in Austria,” she said. “The family I stayed with spoke English, Spanish, and German. I was surprised at how open and friendly the German students were, and I appreciated the strong sense of community and camaraderie among the students at the school. I also learned I like sauerkraut.” Patty Frank, Biltmore Prep teacher and trip chaperone, said it was easy for students to forge new friendships. “Almost immediately the students were talking and sharing as though they were longtime friends,” Frank said. “They were true ambassadors.” Biltmore Preparatory Academy principal Faith Burtamekh said. “Programs like this truly make the world a smaller place.” Biltmore Preparatory Academy is an “A” rated kindergarten-through-eighth- grade school at 4601 N. 34th St. Its Foreign Language Immersion program has garnered signi fi cant attention for its innovative approach and resulted in the highest increase in enrollment of any school in the Creighton district during the past few years. Far- fl ung concerts mark calendar for month of May By Craig Goossen The shows are all over the map in May, so you’ll be required to travel. Go west for the country superstars. Slip into Scottsdale for a singer songwriter. And head downtown for just about everything else. Regarding downtown, this is the month you should take a cab and make it a night. There’s too much solid action downtown and you simply can’t ignore it any further. Pick a show and get down there early to explore the high-quality kitchens and world-class bars. Enjoy a snack at Blue Hound, then ask them to make you anything with a Rittenhouse Rye. Drop into The Breadfruit to enjoy perfect Jamaican cuisine and have an Appleton at the heavenly Rum Bar. Downtown Phoenix is a vibrant and maturing destination, an environment that should make us very proud.
