Montessori teaching depends on freedom of choice. “You are going to create scienti fi c minds,” she said. “You are going to create bold children, children who are not seeking positive reinforcement from someone else. We inspire them to drive themselves.” Parent and community involvement provide activities such as a grandmother teaching students yoga and a parent volunteering to teach Spanish. Students participate in an art show each March where local artists create with them. “Back when I started it was kind of a hippie thing,” Pemberton said. “But it’s been well accepted.” She said former students bring their own children back to the school. “Everything is word of mouth,” Pemberton said. “People come back and they tell each other about it. It just perpetuates itself.” She said she likes to remember when neighbors kept animals and their chickens roamed the area. One year, 78 chicks hatched in the schoolyard. The school used to keep an animal pen. “The Health Department wrote me up because the goat didn’t have a vaccination,” Pemberton recalled. “So I go down to the vet and say, ‘The goat needs a vaccination.’ The vet starts laughing at me, and says, ‘You don’t vaccinate a goat!’” Eventually the animals had to go. While the city and the school have changed, Pemberton said people continue to appreciate hands-on education. “Some things stay the same.” Customers New Buy one General Pest Control get your 2nd one FREE! During this weekend, the swimmers were able to watch the highest levels of swimming from Olympians, All-Americans, and National Age Group record setters. “It was a great group and they put together some great performances,” McCaffrey said. “As coaches, we’re very proud to be representing kids like this on the Phoenix Swim Club.” Edgar said the events also provide learning opportunities for students and teach them how to make a difference in their community. “We consistently discuss positive acts of kindness in our classroom environment and how to be a great leader,” Edgar said. “These fundraising and community activities allow the children to experience these acts of kindness and leadership roles.” Musselmann said since the community plays a big part in the school by providing volunteers and support the school returns the favor by picking fundraisers with a local connection. “I think that’s what makes Hopi such a unique school, is that we have such strong community involvement,” Musselmann said. “Community coming in and helping the school, but then we also have outreach to different programs. ... We are always trying to do things to help the community.” Broucek and Musselmann agreed the school is their happy place. They said they enjoy coming to campus to volunteer and through their work are able to make school a happy place for the students. “I love to volunteer,” Musselmann said. “I love to do whatever I can, and I thought I could give back and help my kids and teachers continue to grow and develop.” 3641 N. 56th Street, Phoenix • 480-945-9537 • www.popphoenix.org Northeast corner of 56th St. and Indian School Road Lots of fun for your preschooler this summer! • Ages 2-5 • Flexible Scheduling • Indoor Gymnasium Worship at Prince of Peace Every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. through May 12.
