The PRSC works with local businesses to bring sports events to the Valley and to attract tourists to those events, as well as building support for local teams and working to develop youth sports. Currently, Brown and her team are working to put together the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, which will be May 9 at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. The hall of fame is designed was created to celebrate people in sports who have impacted Arizona through their connection with the state. The 2013 inductees will include professional golfer Heather Farr, USA Olympic diver Michele Mitchell, NBA All-Star Lafayette “Fat” Lever and businessman and entrepreneur Karl Ellis, who was a founding investor in the Phoenix Suns and whose in fl uence helped draw other professional franchises to the Valley. The commission is also working on a soccer showcase, also in May, and is developing baseball and basketball showcases which are slated to start in 2014. In creating more showcases, the commission hopes to provide high school athletes with experiences similar to the better-established club-level showcases and tournaments. The ability to work with sports ranging from youth through professional leagues is another unique aspect Brown enjoys about her job. “There aren’t many organizations where you can be involved in all levels of sports,” she said. She researched the NCAA’s pod bracketing system for her master’s thesis at UNC, then earned her law degree at ASU’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. After working as an associate attorney in a fi rm specializing in com- plex commercial litigation, contract negotiations and business transactions, she hopes to put that expertise to good use as the commission works to bring events and fans to the Valley. Phoenix Swim Club excels in spring championships By Harley Paige Zugbaum The athletes of the Phoenix Swim Club have been making a huge splash this year. PSC swimmers in the 8 and Under Championship at the Oro Valley Municipal Pool in mid-March excelled. “Our PSC age group swimmers came and conquered. Every swimmer was top eight in an event for their age group and every swimmer swam a personal best time,” said coach Maureen Rankin. Phoenix Swim Club’s 8 and Under swimmers included Elle Bartels, Perry Daniel, Cate Dunn, Nolan Ellish, Michael Ellison, Gabriel Gonda, Libby LaBianca, Mia Mirabelli, Gracie Munk, McKinnon Simmons, Elsa Steen Koppell, Maximus Tursanovic, Charlie Palmer, Luke Rankin and Rebeca Salas. Munk fi nished fi rst in eight of 10 events and second in the other two. She quali fi ed for two AZ Swimming Age Group State meets with qualifying times in every event for 10 and Under girls. PSC hosted the Age Group State Championships this year and took third place for the second year in a row. Even though weather conditions at the time of this event were not ideal, the members of the team were still able to shine. Coach Garrett McCaffrey said every swimmer had at least one or two lifetime bests. The PSC participants included Alejandro Fuentes, Derek Gemar, Lara Gemar, Ty Gruwell, Cameron Heidenreich, Larissa Hodge, Jocelyn Jones, Jennifer Keenan, Ana Kilibarda, Megan Klander, Katie McCoy, Jared Norton, Tierney Phillips, Patrick Schramm, Joe Travis, Mike Travis, Alexa Teneyck, Jostin Trinidad and Helena Valenzuela. Norton won the high-point award for 13- 14 year olds. He won the 200 free, 200 IM, 200 fl y and 100 fl y. He was also the runner up in the 100 free and sixth in the 500 free. Phoenix Swim Club was the second- place team at the 2013 Arizona Senior State Short Course Championship.
