Page 41 April 2013 S.E.E.D CAFÉ 3802 E. Indian School Road 602-626-7307 S.e.e.d plants healthy food in workout environment By Amanda Goossen When The Madison Improvement Club opened on Indian School Road late last year, Arcadia residents were all a fl utter. What is it? What could this unique gray building be bringing to the neighborhood? Now about six months later, people are raving. Not only about the outstanding yoga and spin classes, but about S.e.e.d Café that sits inside this workout haven like a modern and hip hangout with extraordinary cuisine and class. Come to sweat, and then enjoy a snack. Or just do lunch with friends. I’m not afraid to admit my personal breakfast, lunch and dinner dates at this casual Arcadia spot far exceed my workouts. While I highly enjoy the spin class, my heart has always had a soft spot for food. Thanks to Chef Joe Meyers and the company motto, which is what S.e.e.d stands for—Sustainable, Edible, Entirely Delicious—this little, local eatery makes eating healthy food easy, obtainable and spectacular. Partners Mary Swanson and Andrew Varela said opening a spin and yoga studio in Arcadia was just an outside thought. “When my partner Mary Swanson and I saw our current OM-azing building for sale, we decided to take a look. We walked in, and the vision became immediate. Two years later, we’ve recycled a com- munity space that includes all of our favorite things, spin/yoga/healthy food,” Varela said. The idea for the restaurant grew organically. “S.e.e.d Café came to life because I wanted a place to re-fuel after our workouts. Also, with my father being in the restaurant business, I have always wanted to get in the food game. After bringing on extremely talented Chef Joe Meyers, the concept of healthy (yet delicious) really took off,” Varela said. Meyers is a Phoenix native who previously worked in some of the area’s most popular restaurants such as T’Cooks, Tarbell’s, LGO and Gallo Blanco. “We gave Joe free reign to create a menu of his own. It turned out brilliant,” Varela said. Breakfast items include fresh-squeezed juices and smoothies, which are not average or run of the mill. With meticulous combinations of fruits and veggies, you’ll know your drinking to improve your health, but absolutely won’t taste it. The Acai Bowl is one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever eaten. With a cup of Greek yogurt, an acai berry blend, granola and fresh fruit, it’s as if you’ve stepped off Indian School Road straight onto a tropical island. Breakfast wraps are another big hit and include the Mexy Veggy (black beans, corn, tomatoes, roasted chilies, queso fresco and eggs), the All In One (turkey bacon, Yukon gold potatoes, cheddar cheese and eggs) and the Hot Shot (chicken, spinach, oven- dried tomatoes, goat cheese and eggs). Since my fi rst bite of the Hot Shot, I’ve dreamed of starting my day with one every single morning. When asked where the fun names come from for many of the menu items, Varela said: “One of our mottos is ‘being boring sucks’…so we aim to create things that are quirky, silly or unexpected. “We had a company meeting one day where we were all asked to write down three things we dream of having, and we didn’t have to stay within the realms of reality. “At the con- clusion, we picked six that we liked best and, voila, we had the names of our smoothies.” Sandwiches and salads are another g u a r a n t e e d great order. And with the patio about to become enclosed and air-conditioned, it’s a great way to enjoy a lunch hour. The Santa Maria sandwich, one of S.e.e.d’s most popular items, includes roasted turkey, avocado, arugula, brie and the restaurant’s signature mango jalapeno jam, served on nine-grain bread. The Old Skool Remix includes hot peanut butter and house-made mixed berry jam on sourdough or nine-grain bread. It’s a grown up PB&J, in the best possible way. And now serving dinner, as well offering wine, beer and cocktails, S.e.e.d Café is the perfect way to begin or end the day in Arcadia. Maybe both.
