Page 8 March 2013 Justice Steven Sarkis StandDown offers aid to veterans By Steve Sarkis Each year, Arizona hosts a great program called Arizona StandDown. The main focus of this program is to assist homeless and at-risk veterans in various aspects of their lives. During the event, veterans have access to more than 70 services aimed at cutting red tape and ultimately helping to get them on a path to meaningful employment. Since its inception, this event has had continued success with each passing year, serving 743 veterans in 2009 and up to 1,293 in 2012. One of the great ways in which the courts get involved in Arizona StandDown is by clearing fi nes, releasing licenses and closing cases once and for all. Veterans who take part in this outreach event can clear their fi nes with the courts at one station and get a new driver’s license at the next station through the Motor Vehicle Division. Other major service providers include VA health care and bene fi ts, Department of Economic Security, and Social Security Administration. In addition, veterans who attend the event also receive meals, new clothing, access to shower facilities and housing placement assistance. This year, Arizona StandDown is March 8-10 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum on the Arizona State Fairgrounds, 1826 W. McDowell Road. This event relies mainly upon public support and contributions.
